I'm thinking of buying/building a 338 fed. My question is...has anybody out there ever built a custom on a 77 mark2 action? If so what stocks and barrels did you use? I have seen HS stocks on rugers and they are nice but never a mac. If you have ever built a custom or semi-custom 77 let me know the details and post a pic if you can. Thanks.

I have had at least 15 custom rifles on ruger M77 and mk11 action.Used douglas,shilen,ron smith barrels.Stocks Mcmillan,brown,HS precision,Bell&carlson
love the action and with a little work they shoot very well.I had a custom 416 taylor on a mk11 that was shot under an inch with every load.
I will dig up some pics.

That's why I'm using a ruger action. I have many remingtons that I use when I'm looking for precision, but the places and conditions I hunt in have sent a few remingtons back to the wall tent for service. I have never had a ruger ice up, come out of zero, fail to fire, fail to eject or fail in anyway for that matter. THEY JUST WORK. Now when I hunt, I use ruger. Accuracy in all my rugers is more than adequate for any hunting application and really no better/worse than any other factory gun. My precision remingtons all wear custom barrels and have had much work done to make them shoot the way they do. I suspect the 338 federal will shoot awesome with a shilen.

Any other input would be appreciated.

I'd love to get my hands on a M77 Mark II RSM action. I've got an RSM in 416 Rigby but would love to put one together in 500 Jeffrey or 505 Gibbs. But they're so damned expensive and rare that it would be almost impossible for me to chop one to build a custom. It's my favourite action though and I'd much rather use it than a CZ. Sadly, I think the CZ will end up getting the nod unless I happen upon an old widow with a Brevex or similar Mauser action in the old man's gun cupboard.

Nice gun BUM, I'm looking at their .375 H&H, friggin' beautiful. I just never hunt anything big enough to warrant it.

You never hunt moose or elk? It'd be perfect for them. Plus, there are scary bears out there in the forest. Always best to have a stout medium-bore to keep you safe.

True enough, have an elk hunt I'm supposed to be a part of next year... Mayyyybe I can justify it to myself one of these days, for now, still rely on an M77 .308.

BUM, you did it, picked up my RSM .375 H&H, selling like crazy to fund it now. Going to be a one gun hunter now however, .375 H&H for everything. Justified it by telling myself I'll never need another hunting rifle, and I like the one gun philosophy. Of course, that philosophy leaves out my varminters, and precision rigs... I'm a sham. Well, only the H&H will come out after big game, almost counts.
