IDPA guns

I would say the Glock 9mm (Mdl 17) and the Smith and Wesson M&P in 9mm are the most popular guns in IDPA..... for a beginner it is hard to go wrong with either one.

Holsters and mag pouches are easy to find as well as spare mags.... I would make sure you havea total of at minimum 5 magazines to make life easy.

other guns I would look at depending what class you want to shoot would be the STI Trojan 1911 in 9mm, great for ESP.

other then those, take your pic to what fits you and what you can shoot fast and accuratlly.....

I shot glocks myself, and now that the extended barrels are legal will be using my G26 and G19 more.... along with my G17 and G34. (also have a G17L but it does not fit the box :( )

You should try to find a copy of the last IDPA magazine and you could truely find out what is being used and in what numbers.

I would say most guys in SSP are using Glocks or M&P's. In ESP, 1911 made by STI or CZ's. CDP are 1911's.

These are my observations in the shoots I have been at.

Glock is by far the most popular gun in IDPA. That being said, we encourage you to CLASSIFY in all IDPA Divisions or at least try them.

SSP-Stock Service Pistol. Unless it can be carried condition one "cocked and locked", and you choose to shoot this way, then it would be ESP-Enhanced Service Pistol

actually SSP is what it is most suited for, but it can also be shot in ESP in DA/SA mode, it does not have to be cocked and locked.

I thought this is what I said Wes, only my point was that if you want to shoot the gun Condition 1 if it has this capability, it must be shot in ESP in this mode.

maybe we are mis communicating.... or I am reading you wrong

but even in ESP you CAN shoot the gun from DA/SA mode to start... you do not have to have the pistol cocked and locked even if it has that capability, what you do have to have is the safety enguaged in either mode if available..... so even if the pistol can be cocked and locked it does not have to be, but all safety devices must be used.

3. Enhanced Service Pistol Division (ESP)
Handguns permitted for use in this division must:
A. Be semi-automatic.
B. Be 9mm (9x19) or larger caliber.
C. Have a maximum unloaded weight of 43 oz., including an
empty magazine.
D. Fit in the IDPA gun test box measuring 8 ¾” x 6” x 1 5/8.”
with an empty magazine inserted.
E. Be loaded to the division capacity of ten (10) rounds in the
magazine plus one (1) round in the chamber. Should division
capacity not be achievable because of lower magazine
capacity, load should be to maximum mechanical capacity of
magazine plus one (1) round in the chamber. Competitors
must use the same capacity magazines through out the
competition (Example: if you start with a 9 round magazine,
you must use that capacity magazine throughout the match).
Pistols approved for SSP may also be used in ESP and CDP
depending upon caliber, even if the pistol in question has a fulllength
dust cover. However, should the pistol in question have a
modification that removes it from SSP, it must meet all other
division criteria for ESP or CDP, again depending upon caliber.

a lot of people willtry different classes... I plan on trying Revolver Class this year, either SSR or ESR depending on what my revolver weighs when it gets back from the smith chopping the barrel down to 106mm.

glocks are shot in all semi auto classes including CDP.... but cavet emptor, it is not the gun that is winning the competitions, it is the shooter. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE and no matter what the gun you will come out ahead of some once a year wonder with an uber pistol.

just want to add... DO NOT feel that you have to spend a lot of money...seriously, get a pistol, get a holster and a double mag pouch and get out and shoot.

you can start with a norinco 1911 for $399, a 5.11 holster and double mag pouch from dstactical and be shooting for under $500

Exactly.............!

In IDPA, Stock Service Pistol (SSP), Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP), Custom Defensive Pistol (CDP), Stock Service Revolver (SSR) and Enhanced Service Revolver (ESR) are DIVISIONS.

The CLASSES are Novice (NV), Marksman (MM), Sharpshooter (SS), Expert (EX) and Master (MA)

Shooters compete in a DIVISION according to their gun's action type; shooters compete against other shooters of a similar skill level in a CLASS within a DIVISION.

Let's try and use the correct terminology, shall we? :slap:

It's not about being a snob; it's about language and effective communication. You're a club contact and therefore represent IDPA. Steve David is an SO instructor! What are people to think about IDPA if its representatives and instructors can't use the correct terminology?
