Hi All. I was wondering if I could appeal to the guru's for some answers about the PPSH 41's muzzle brake, flash hider, gas booster design?

Could someone tell me how many degrees off horizontal the brake is cut at? It looks like about 50 degrees?

Also (I looked on the net and had no luck) does any one have a top down and bottom up photo of the muzzle?

Last question, there looks to be a "washer" (for lack of a better term) welded around the barrel at the back of the muzzle brake. Is the barrel actually connected to this washer or is it floating inside it? I assume they put that "washer" there to help keep gas from escaping back up the barrel shroud and create a slight gas boosting effect to increase reliability.

Thanks!
Clobb

Top is open, bottom is closed. The "washer" is a barrel support. Barrel is not fastened to it; pushed through from behind.
I suppose the theory behind the brake is that gas would strike the angled endpiece, and be deflected back and up to reduce recoil and flip. I think the angle would be greater than 50 degrees. Certainly makes the gun loud.

Its at 70 degrees from the bore axis.... and the "washer" is welded in place as previously mentioned.

THANK YOU!!!!!:wave::cheers:

I very much appreciate the pictures. The CGN community always comes through!:)

Edit: I bet if that rifle could talk it could tell some stories! The muzzle brake looks dented in a bit. Also, I've never seen a PPSH up close (some day I hope) but I'm struck by how crudely it was made. The front sight looks a little crooked and the welds look very hastily done! At the same time I'm struck by how ingenious the design was. ....I'd love to see pics of the full rifle.

First time I have seen a PPSh with the pressed reinforcing rib wrapped around the top of the magazine.
It is interesting to consider that the PPSh and the Sten were put into production when the Soviet Union and the UK were both hard pressed. The PPSh is a somewhat more substantial firearm.

Ok here are some PPSH41 pics some muzzel and Magazine pics

gun is a DEWATT a NONE GUN

the ribbed stick mag is supposedly a ww2 magazine the other one is postwar the drum is ww2 or very shortly after

all magazines are pinned the drum is rivited as seen in pic

to load the drum one would remove the cover whind it up till it locked and stand the rnds in the drum reinstall cover and press button to release spring
