The mounts from our August, 2007 South African plains game hunt arrived in late October (2008).

For those who are curious about how they get shipped, they were secured to the walls of a plywood crate:

The horns come off for shipping and were zip-tied to one of the inner walls.

All of the work was done by Karoo Taxidermy in RSA. The workmanship was excellent. All told, it took 14 months from the conclusion of the hunt to the arrival of the finished mounts.

Your impala is almost the mirror image of mine. I love that wall pedestal mount as it shows off more of the animal. I think they're possibly the prettiest animal to get as a pedestal, especially if they get a lot of shoulder.

Is that a Bull Gemsbok? He looks like he'd go 38" or 39" by my field estimate. Definately a shooter in my book. They look great.

14 months seems like a long wait. Did they come ocean freight or air?

The wall pedestals were definitely the way to go, more attractive, in my view, than the conventional shoulder mounts that we are used to.

The Gemsbuck is a bull and he was very decent. I'll check the exact measurement, but as I recall, he's close to 40".

The mounts were all shipped together for five members of our group. Two decided to have their hides dipped and packed (which didn't really save a lot of time, as theirs are with their taxidermist now).

It turned out that the mounts were ready in early September, making it just over a year from the end of our hunt. Add the time it took to get them off to the freight forwarder and that added about another six weeks.

All of the crates were shipped by air freight. Nothing got lost or damaged.

Those are amazing, A-zone.
One day I hope to do the same.
I have no interest in big cats or the Big 5 apart from Cape Buffalo but these species of Plains Game are exactly what I would choose.
Getting them home must be the culmination of the experience.
Could you tell me if you did a thread on your 2007 hunt?
I'd love to read the story.

Wow! Just my kind of decor. My wife would freak :D. My next house is going to have a man cave furnished just like that, but with NA game. Thanks for sharing it with us.

The following threads were dedicated to this African plains game hunt:

In total, seven guys went in our group (that was also the capacity of our Outfitter's lodge). Being in such a unique setting and devoting every day to remarkably productive and varied hunting (compared to what we're used to) was an awe-inspiring experience.

x2 on the Cape Buffalo (for next time).

I guess 40" is a "decent" bull oryx! I said I wouldn't shoot another one unless it was a bull that was better than 38" (my cow is 41" so you'd need a big one to go next to her). I like the zip-tie attachment of the horns to the outside of the box. Ours were just bubble-wrapped and in the bottom of the crate which was no problem and no damage ensued but the zip-ties are a great idea.

2007 was a good year for CGNers in Africa. A-Zone and Neo went on one trip, model70guy went on another, Rick at ATRS went and back40sniper and I went.

I'm planning 2010 for the bad cow (as back40sniper calls them) maybe in Namibia but that's up in the air. Guys don't realize that you can hunt Africa for a damned good price these days. I think by the time I was all said and done including airfare from up here in the boons to darkest Africa, taxidermy and shipping I got out at a hair under $18K but that's just a guess. I also shot a whack of critters and had everything mounted. There's trips for much cheaper than that but as with anything, you get what you pay for.

Beautifull mounts thanks for sharing. I went back and read your trip story, sounds like a great time. Reading your story and seeing the pictures confirms in my mind that i have to go on an African safari!

Great looking mounts....I've heard some disaster stories about African taxidermists so glad it worked out. Did you end up having to pay GST on the taxidermy as well as the animals when you imported them?

Counting the days here....only 76 more till we leave!
