Anyone shootign a .30-30 Ackley Improved? How do you like it? Notice much difference between it and a standard .30-30 Win. ? I'm also looking for a compitant gunsmith that could rechamber a Marlin 336 from .30-30 win. to .30-30AI. Preferably in Ontario but I guess it doesnt really matter if he does a proper job.

Thanks
Tim

I got almost 200 fps over standard 30-30 velocities in my 20" barreled 94.

The bonus is you can still shoot Factory 30-30's through it if needed....easy fireforming;)

It does not turn the 30-30 into a 308 winchester but it does have some noticeable gains.

Good Luck !

The way I was looking at it I figured it would be close to a 300 Savage in performance with equal weight bullets.......?????

Tim
Why not just buy a nice 99 in 300 Savage? You'll get to use pointy bullets, regular dies and no gunsmithing a custom chamber. Nicer rifle to boot.

Ah yes the 307 win

I had a lovely336A in .30-30 Ackley and foolishly let it go. Yes, ballistic twin to the .300 Savage. No, not a .307 Winchester. Nothing like it, except for performance level. Check Lee Precision for dies if you get the work done; their .30-30 Ackley die set is $39.99 as opposed to RCBS' $125.00 and up.....
And for those who like traditional, tube-fed, exposed hammer levers, the Savage 99 is not a "nicer" rifle....just a different one. Also common as dirt, which is fine if you want a common-as-dirt rifle. But some people prefer something a bit less common, for example stainless laminated-stock .257 Roberts rifles.......SuperCub!

300 Savage is expensive often un available ammo.

30/30 win is all over the place.

I'd re chamber my 94 win to AI tomorrow if I could find the reloading dies, and a gunsmith to do it. :)

I guess "nicer" is a matter of opinion & pointy boolits, dont forget. You're allowed to be wrong. ;)

Stainless, yes. Laminated, no. Laminated is too heavy for such a girly gun. You're only half right this time. :p

I thought your Roberts was a laminated stock....gettin' forgetful, I reckon!
Regarding pointy bullets, the Hornady FXP LeverEvolution bullets are available in '09 to load into Ackleys....

And I sure am allowed to be wrong....I exercise that right every chance I get!

This is actually somthing I was considering doing. I have a cute little Stevens 325 boltgun in .30-30. I thought it would make a nice rifle if I had a scope mount installed, the chamber reamed out and a nice little 2-7 Leupold on top. 150 grain Ballistic tips sound about right for it, and it's so light weight as she sits now it would be a pleasure to carry.

That would be a great choice. I had a Savage 340 (another .30-30 I stupidly sold) and I had a terrible time finding spitzers that would seat deep enough to allow cycling. As an Ackley, the case length is very slightly shorter (2.000" nominal) but I would use a bullet like the Leverevolution with a shorter ogive. I also had great accuracy with the 150 Speer .30-30 bullet; it's a flat point that almost looks like a spitzer. The meplat is quite small.
My Savage was scoped and would shoot MOA with handloads consisting of Reloder 15 and 150 grain Remington roundnoses.

Been alot of Great reviews on Horny's New 160 grain Leverlution stuff for the dirty thirties.....once the Bullets become available to the handloaders up here it would certainly make the 30-30 AI abit more appealing to the mag tube boys.

Supposed to be this year actually according to hornady.

I've been thinking about a 30-30 ai project for some time now. I like the light weight and handling of levers but a little extra horsepower from the 30-30 round is nice and gives it just that little extra reach out power.

And i suppose if you're bound and determined to use 'pointy' bullets you can always just use the gun as a two shot and only keep one in the mag :)

I am looking to play with some Leverevolution in my dirty 30 and put some better sights on the old pig too. 60's Marlin Glenfield. The iron sights on it suck but it shoots and cycles like silk. From an article I was reading the other day I can expect something in the area of a 40% increase in range because of the powder used and the BC of the bullets. Yeah I saw they are releasing the bullets too but I checked with Reliable here in town and no show yet. Or I could just take my Savage 99c 308 too but I like the Marlin and it is a nice carry. So is the Savage. Loading both and will have to do a lot more shooting to compare the results real or imagined. Then again I can always load a hot pointy load in the chamber:)

I think the 30-30 AI is one of the few AI's that really give an improvement to the parent cartridges velocity, and stays within accepted pressure levels.

That said, if Barnes would come out with a 130gr TSX FP bullet, I think that you woudl get 2500FPS or so, and have the same bullet capabilities of a regular 170gr SP.

Well, BCWill, I am not going into this blindly believing either but I figger its worth a shot or two. At least then I will know and will have a better understanding of what to expect. They seemed to think we would not be able to load safely hot enough to come up to the expected performance but I got powder, primers, and boolits so I will just have to find out. How about "cautiously optimistic"?:)
