I've read alot of negatives about the p22 in the past but honestly have never come across a problem with my wife's until now. It shoots great, never had a FTL or a FTF. This gun is my wife's gun and she always cleans it. Yesterday I took it out and when i was cleaning it i found out what a pain in the a$$ it is to clean with the 5" barrel. For anyone who doesn't know you have to use 2 allen wrenches to take the sight holder or whatever it's called off first. Then to put the main spring back in you have to use another rod to follow it in with. Not a nice gun to clean in the field. Again I have not seen any functioning problems with this gun and it is quite accurate but it is a pain to clean. Maybe it would be easier with the shorter barrels.

I have noticed the exact same thing with my wife's P22. She loved it so much when we got married that she "claimed" it, and I haven't fired or cleaned it since. Eventually, she got tired of having to take off the front sight mount/barrel weight, so she just moved the front sight onto the slide itself and left the thing off the muzzle. It looks kinda goofy now, but it's just as accurate, and she has a much easier time shooting and cleaning it.

So far, still no FTF or FTL either, which makes me wonder about the reports from other people who say the P22 is junk. Maybe the earlier models had some problems, but the one we own functions perfectly. If it didn't, my wife probably would have let me know by now (she's a redhead, and possesses a combustible temperament).

Maybe the earlier models had some problems...

They did, and some were quite serious. Later models - 2005 onwards I believe - were much better.

My P22 is a blast to shoot. I've never had any problems with it. No FTEs ever and only a few FTFs - each attributed to bad .22 rounds.

My only complaint, other than the stupid 5" version we have to have, is that the extractor/ejector needs a bit of work. Out of every 10 rounds, there's usually one that flings up vertically and lands square on my head. I've heard of people modifying their P22s because of this issue but I don't remember what they did. I'll get fed up one day and figure it out.

Yes, they are a bit of a pain to clean. I guess you could just use the dishwasher. ;)

I've also had the brass land on my head - its all part of the fun! I believe the fix was to stretch the extractor spring a little.
I don't care for removing the fake compensator, especially because it needs loctite to not have the screws back out in use.
I've happily used it before with the fake comp removed. I plan to have the barrel shortened on mine.
