Could someone please help me id this rifle :
I was told it was a Lebel but the markings say:
'St-Etienne Mle1892' and 'MA S 1914'
serial number 'F32842' and it's got what looks like mag under which I guess was meant for a 5 round clip. No mention of the caliber on it.
I've got pictures on my computer but haven't figured out yet how to attach them to this post.

Sounds like the model 1892 carbine, made at St. Etienne with a 1914 St Etienne barrel and converted to the mle 16 5 round magazine system.

The mle 16 pattern was the standard carbine from 1917 onward. Used in WII and post war as well.

Receiver should be marked "N" where it meets the barrel to indicate that the chamber has been relieved for the mle 1932 Balle "N"ammunition (if so converted. If not, it is still chambered for the Balle D round).

Calibre is the 8x50R Lebel (not the same as 8X50R Mannlicher)

Don't see any 'N' nowhere bu I se 'CC' and a cercled 'C' and a circled 'M' outside of the chamber on the left side.
Barrel is only 17 1/4" long !

CC is the barrel steel maker and the circled letters are inspector's intials.

France converted many older model 3 shot Berthiers to the 1916 5 shot magazine. I have seen 07/15 rifles converted to Mle16 standard rifles and carbines as well.

Hope it shoots well. I got it for $75.00. Will start looking for dies, slug the bore and hope .323 jacketed bullets will fit. Can't wait.

Mine is 'MA S 1914' and the 2 cercled lettres are 'C' and 'M'. Before this you can see 'C C' not cercled.
