Legit question....

With all the hassle of getting barrels from the USA and all the available machining businesses sitting idle from lack of work from the auto sector,
why do some not lean towards barrel making?

Please....try to keep the speculation to a minimum and focus on the hard facts.

My guess here would be based on intelligent guess work. I use to be a commercial underwriter for a very large insurance company and firearms related business is a HUGE risk and therefore subject to very, very ,very (read: REALLY) exorbant insurance premiums......I would imagine that this would be a huge deterant in getting into barrel manufacturing.
Also, I imagine that there would be some specific tooling, ie barrel boring machine and rifling machine that would have a hefty pricetag attached to it. They would also need to hire someone who is experienced in producing good quality barrels, and people who are knowledgeable would be few and far between. These are just my guesses, I would LOVE to see a new manufacturer in Canada.....it would probably make things easier and possibly cheaper.

Maybe theres so few customers because its expensive to import barrels, if they were made here for less there would be more customers. Just speculating.

Wham have you ever seen a barrel blank? There a pile of machining involved to to bring it down to a sporter contour. I was good friend with a guy that had a custom rifle shop here in Edmonton and watched him lathe many a barrel down, mostly Ron Smith barrels.
The barrel makers that we do have in Canada make world class products. FS

My guess would be that anyone who thinks they might go into the barrel making business decides they'd rather not starve to death.
A dozen gunnutz who all want stuff cheap isn't what I'd call a "market"

the population density (and hence customer base) in canada compared to the USA would be a big issue. you go where the bussiness is.

the cost to setup would be horrendus.

not really a smart bussiness move.

even if someone did setup in canada, i don't think they would be the most affordable barrels ever. you could probably still get a barrel out of the USA cheaper, if the border ever opens up again.

it's really a shame that we dependent on the states to the extent that we are, but what can you do!
