For the last two years I have really started to do alot of predator hunting and have enjoyed it alot. I was using a .22-250 that I bought for a build but it's tore apart now and I don't really want to completly destroy the hide with my hunting rifles so I am looking at a simple budget custom for next year. Probably a savage action, pac nor barrel, mcmillan stock. Not really sure what direction I want to go with picking a round to chamber it in. I liked the .22-250 but there are so many choices out there:D Looking for something that puts them down reliably with good shot placement but doesn't rip them in two. Also would like it to work well in a short action.

I know it's a little outdated, but I love my 222 Rem. It's accurate, not too loud, and with the right bullets it doesn't tear up the pelts very much.

Both are a coyotes worst nightmare. I flip a coin to which leaves the safe when I go coyote hunting.

I do love a 223, 55gr FMJ out of a bull barell Ruger Number One. But the ultimate is the Ruger No1 218 Bee and a custom Martini in 218K Bee whacks em good and does not hoop the hide my two bits keep your stick on the ice.
 
Hands down, my .223s can't touch my 22-250 for coyotes. Also, I love the bang it makes. My grandpa told me that other predators can associate that noise with the dead coyote, potentially keeping others away from my livestock.

The rest of the cartridge choices I don't have much experience with.

From what i hear. .223 and .22-250 are the most popular .
22-250 has longer range, but a noticable louder crack though.
They take the same bullets.
I was considering a .204, but right now there is not much for choices for bullets, and i hear and see pics of coyotes that have messy holes in them.
There is a "you-tube" video of .204 and exploding prairie dogs.
right now i use a .22mag in my semi wooded area,
but when we are in open farm fields i borrow friends
.223 or 22-250.
Noise is not an issue on the farms, but is in the area where i live.
In Ont there is a restriction on caliber for hunting preditors during the closed
big game season.
I beleive its calibers up to but not including .270

I use:
.22 mag rimfire,
.22 Hornet,
.222 Rem (most of the time)
.250 Savage
.25-06 Rem.
But, one could eventually get on your list, I may use the .243 in the future.
 
I use my .270 for coyote, but I voted for the .223 I think it is an all around small game cartridge. I think alot depends on where you are hunting. Here in the East, at least where I hunt, ranges are generally under 300 yrds. I would imagine out West where the land is more open, something like the 22-250 would be a better choice. The next gun I buy will probably be a Savage Predator 10XP in snow camo chambered in .223 cal.

So far, I've only managed to connect when I've got my .270. It's not intentional, just happens that way. Going to grab a .223 for something a little more economical and g/f friendly, probably a Savage 25
