As a Newb, can someone explain to me the basics behind this type of shooting, the requirements, equipment etc???
Thanks

Howdy, If you go to www.sassnet.com the basic rules of the game are accessible as well as a forum & buy and sell. It's U.S. based, but most of the Canadian CAS shoots follow the same basic rules with minor changes to suit the regs we have to follow up here. You need a pistol caliber lever action rifle, 2 single action revolvers, (although at the club level, some will allow you to use a double action shot single action just to get you going), and either a double barrel, or hammered pump (Win. 97 etc) shotgun. Costume can be as simple as a pair of jeans, a long sleeve shirt, some kind of leather shoe/boot (no sneakers) and a cowboy hat, fedora, or period correct cloth cap ( no baseball caps). Come to a shoot and get the flavor of the sport before you buy a bunch of gear. If you're in southern Ontario, both Wentworth, and BRRC have shoots all winter long. Check their websites.
Happy trails.

Thunder Bay has a club too. I don't know if the bigger cities are as much fun, but we have some truly creative stage designers and fun props.

Miss Eulalia Canthus, spinster school marm at your service.

I too would be very interested in getting into this (not only does it look fun, but the loads are CHEAP!).

A question on the shotguns though, everything I've read says either SxS or pump (w/ ext hammers). Would I be allowed to use an old single shot, external hammer gun? Been looking around for a appropriate gun, but they seem few and far between...but I found an old Cooey for free that I hoped would work. I know that I would be at a speed disadvantage, but it would only be for a while.

The short answer is now YES
Before the rest of the CAS folks try to correct me, I mean yes as per the SASS rule changed at the 2008 Territorial Governors Summit, agenda item #10
It passed 226 to 50
The revised rules will be posted shortly to reflect this and other changes.
Traditional and Modern categories have been combined and will then be split into two age based categories.

CDTSA.Org Calgary District Target Shooters Association during the summer months also puts on an excellent monthly Cowboy action match.

Sapper, if your going to use the old cooey don't forget to polish the chamber with dowling and steel wool for easier shell extraction.

pump rifle

buying a pedersoli in a 357 pump to be a replica of the old colt lightning

does this qualify as a rifle that can be used.
