Have one registered from long ago...from my mother of all people. .38 spl 2 inch barrel in mint condition. Wondering if anyone has history or value data bases to find out how old and how much?

Go to the S&W Forum, but keep in mind that value in the US will be much, much higher then Canada, as it's a prohib here. Nickel will add a little to the value, but it's still only ever going to be a $300 or so gun in Canuckistan. Sorry. They're a nice little gun, I had a blued one for a while. - dan

The model 40 was introduced in 1952 and was made until 1974. Does the serial # have a letter prefix or is it all numbers? That would help narrow it down.

The diamond grip helps to date it as well. This one was listed for $725USD but as previously mentioned prohibs are worth allot less here.

Those are lovely little revolvers. Check inside the grips, many of the early ones came with a little pin to deactivate the grip safety.

Update with pic (maybe)

Thanks for tips. s/n is L12XX so I am told 1971 ish. My guess less than 100 rounds. Yeah I was hoping for a US price but in Canuckle dollars...

According to my Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson 3rd edition your guess on manufacture date is probably right as they started with the "L1" prefix in 1971 and ended with L9861 in 1974. The US value for excellent condition is listed as $550, unfortunately Dan above is right, most prohib guns in this country are constantly decreasing in value as the number of people who can buy them decreases. My advice is enjoy shooting it and try to wear it out while you can.

Here, it plainly worth $300.00 ,but, this specific revolver is scarce in Canada, and the condition seem exc+. I think for a S&W collectors at heart with a 12(6) might hook on this one for $550.00

And , if you happen to shoot this little one, never used .38+P in this one.

I am always surprised to see these scarce one pop up once in a while on the site!

Thank you for the pics

If I had a 12(6) I'd pay $550 for it.
