Thumb Safety on M&p

Wow.. all helpful replys.. thanks.!!

I was asking because I have seen some sold in the US, that have the thumb safety, so I was wondering if that was just a differet model or if it was something that could be added.!! Most of the ones I have seen have the 4" barrel, so likely it's a different model.

Cool thing about the 45 without the thumb safety is that it is also free of the mag safety, a true 'point gun pull trigger' pistol.

So whats up with CGN now, a guys asks a question and he gets flammed for asking?

As far as I know the thumb safety is an option on all M&P's. You can get them from the factory any way you want it. In fact all M&P's have the cut out on the frame for it. Whats wrong with having another safety on a Gun?

The poor guy was looking for an answer to a question not to get scolded for asking.

If we could get them without the mag safety it would be even better.

I recall seeing an article or post about guys removing the mag safety. Maybe at M & P forum . IIRC, if you get one from the factory without the mag safety, it has something stamped on the slide.

So guys were getting the one with the mag safety, and removing, so there wasn't a warning stamped on the slide.

Of course, it would probably be a good idea to let someone know if you did the mod( if it is possible).

ShooterMcGavin - Who's flamming anyone? I honestly was asking why he would want a safety because i think its great without it. The safety wasn't an option on either of mine and there aren't any cut outs on mine either. You may have it confused with the spot for the lock but that is not a safety. Now don't feel like i'm flamming you.

Why inform anyone? Magazine safety or not, the rules for safe firearms handling don't change. Unless you were informing them as an FYI.

Removal of the mag disconnect would make the gun unacceptable for IDPA and IPSC. Not sure why you would want to as it does not effect the trigger pull.

springer1- I do not feel like you are flaming me, im not that insecure, my whole point is a guy asks a question, and instead of getting an answer he he gets comments.

I have a M&P 45 with the dark earth frame that came with a thumb safety and no mag disconnect and says on the slide that it can be fired without a mag in the gun.

My buddy has an m+P 9mm that has a place that is not cut out for hte thumb safety but shows in the frame where to make the cut on both sides as the thumb safety is abi on M+P pistols.

I got the S&W catologe today at Buff Gun, and you can get the M+P in any flavour you like from the factory, i dont think you can buy the thumb safety for self install just right now, but all of the guns are capible of it.

The thumb safety on the .40's and 9's are new. Last year the only model available with the thumb safety was the .45 I was still under that impression until I saw your post and looked at the S&W site tonight.

EDIT to add:

And also reading on MP-Pistol.com tonight, the opinion of M&P Smiths like Dan Burwell is that the thumb safety cannot be added after the fact, but it is easy to remove when it comes on a gun and then can be added back if desired at a later date. Apparenty a new sear is required and they are a controlled part. The Mag Disconnect can be added and removed at will from any M&P.

Who would know if it has been removed?? Why remove you it you ask? I prefer my pistols to fire when the system is charged and there's a round in the chamber. A magazine isn't necessary but is highly desirable.

when given the unload and show clear, drop hammer command if the magazine safety is removed the gun will obviously fire without a magzine in, most SO's upon seeing an M&P expect the competitior to put a mag in to lower the hammer.....

obviously a competitor can fake this, but it would only take one slip and he would be DQ'ed.
