Question on the use of antique handguns:

I've read the definitions and transport regulations within the law.

There looks to be a lot of areas that are not specifically addressed, or I don't know where to look. For instance - since an antique revolver is not legally a handgun, could it be used for hunting?

Would it be legal to carry an antique status (non-firearm) revolver with you while you were legally hunting? Not concealed - which I understand could be an offense in itself - but openly in a holster?

What's the poop?
 
Well i carry mine on Crown land and i target shoot on crown land and the B.C CFOs have told me its AOK to Discharge a ANTIQUE Handgun anywhere its OK to discharge a Non restricted Firearm.
Its right in the Regs i have to.
But hunting is Ilegal with a Handgun in B.C.

Target shooting tho is my Reason for open carry in a holster anywhere its legal to carry a Non restricted rifle.

Its right there in the Storage Display and Transportation and handleing of firearms by individuals regulations.

If you look under
Applications
(3)
Sections 5 to 14 do not Apply to firearms Ect Ect
(a) Hunting and TARGET SHOOTING

Then go to section
(5) Sections 5 to 13 do NOT apply to Antique Firearms.

Then theres the Antique Firearm seprate compleat section

Read that to! Transport your handgun in a locked case that cant be broken into easy Yada Yada Yada.

I just carry a set of theses regs highlite the parts that fit me.
Oh and a copy of my Antique Firearm letter that States my gun actully is a perscribed Antique.

Of course if you get Caught target shooting at Gophers all bets are off ;)
 
But.... (In Alberta anyway, and only from what armchair lawyers on this site and other varmint hunting sites have said) Gophers are considered varmints, thus are not covered under hunting regs, so that MAY be ok, but your taking your chances. :ar15:

Though there's much better things to shoot at gophers with, and just the chance of having ALL my guns seized and my license taken away is enough for me to not try it. 204 ruger is much more fun.

The law against using a handgun for hunting is a provincial law here in Ontario and is probably against the law in other provinces. That being the case the Federal law won't matter if you can carry it. You can't carry it for hunting.

Yes but unless your NOT alould to Target shoot in the bush in ON (which would not Surprise me :rolleyes:)

Then its the Intent they would have to Prove you were Hunting.

"Hey manwell im going to and isolated spot to do a spot of target shooting old chap bring the howda and the Drilling rifles along Pip Pip " ;)

I walk in the Bush all the time to do a spot of target shooting. Im not hunting im target shooting.

Well of course i wouldnt have much to shoot at if i didnt have a target or two tucked in me back pack.
Some guys just use a chunk of Bark or a lump of wood ontop a stump.

Getting manwell to hold the bark still can be a pain tho :p :D
 
I carry mine when hunting, openly of course. I don't hunt with it though, that would be illegal in Alberta, something I would like to get changed, but it's an uphill battle.

I feel a little better hunting in moose country with my recurve when I have a noisemaker along.

Edit:

I should add the local RCMP and CO are aware I carry it. I felt that was an easier conversation to have before I was handcuffed in the dirt.

The question asked was, could it be used for hunting? If your province specifies that you cannot use a handgun for hunting, then the answer is no.
 
I carry mine when hunting, (in my backpack) , or some time on me , and i talked to the rcmp , and rangers befor there o.k with it

the rcmp was a little pissed off when they first seen it (testing in on some big rocks 50 yards away) but after talking to him for 5-10 min he told me that it was ok. but to keep it away form other ppl seeing it . seeing most ppl will not know it is antique

now i had my gun holster on , in back powder . but i did not have the gun with me (left it in the truck on the back seat... that was dum i know... i was 100yards away)

the ranger asked me what that was for , i told him for when i am walking down a bush trail , if there was a bear runing after me.. or if i kill a deer and it is still alive kicking on the ground , i can give it a shot a lot faster then reloading my bp gun.
he told me that was fine....(with him.) but some rangers may still not like it.. and it may be a headache if they see it.. seeing they will have to call the head office and find out what to do.

but dont keep it in the holster keep it in a backpack. or some where that other hunter will not see it.. seeing lots of ppl would call that in ,not knowing it was antique

i keep mine in my back back now seeing i find that would be the best way of staying out of ####
 
I look at it like this If you are caught breaking ANY law it becomes a resticted or prohibited weapon.So that means your buddies smoking a joint,you got in to the beer to early,speeding,who knows.................................you get a free ride in a cop car!all it takes is 1 a--hole LEO.

and huting in b.c. with handguns is a no no.
 
Its sort of that inbetween, you have to have it plain view, otherwise its concealed, but you don't want anyone in the general public to see it while your hiking/hunting/target shooting in the backwoods. I like the idea of at holster with a flap, protects the gun from dirt and leaves, keeps it out of glancing view, but is ready when you need it in the even of a paper target pops out of nowhere.
 
LOL well Starpuss brings up a Valid point.
I can carry mine in a Holster open on my belt BUT my Coat could cover up the Holster enough a Hippe walking past me on a trail to get to his Dope patch wont see it.
But if i wanted it seen its Right there in plain View.
Putting it in a back pack or carrying it in a Coat pocket is Concealed is it not ?
So Ilegal.

They dont want them flashed around but we cant Conceal em.

I also find with the Old tryed and Tested RCMP Flap Holsters with a sam brown shoulder Strap the gun can be spun around pretty fast so its now hanging off your back while the Hikers or Whatever Walk past.

Most of the time there to Busy watching my Dogs to even notice if my dink was hanging out but i feel better haveing the Holster Moveable on my Body.

Most of the time im so far in the Bush i never see Anyone tho.

As far as What you can and Cant do in ON i just glad i dont live in that province.
My god its like the nighmare on elm st with Halloween throwin in there for good measure and thats just the polititions im talking about... :D

ok well haveing it in a gun case is concealed then aslo. if you have the gun case with u.. when your walking

well haveing it in a gun case/ lock box , in a backpack? would that be ok? maybe ill try that

hunting in manitoba with hundguns is a no no also
