Just picked up a used but mint condition Marlin. Owner biought it new and claims 200 rounds max and cleaned after each use. I am waiting for it to come in the mail, anyone know anything about these? problems or concerns to watch for? Can it be dry fired without damaging anything?

thanks ;)

That's a real find. Classic rifle, well made, accurate and absolutely reliable. Don't dry fire it! Like any rimfire, you will peen the edge of the chamber or wreck the firing pin. The model 39td is one of the most sought after discontinued models. Congratulations.

Excellent rifles !
I think from your pic it's got the cross bolt safety ? If so yes with that on dry fire all day long...it won't hurt nothing as it blocks the hammer from contacting the pin.
It's about the only thing those cross bolt safeties are good for;)

Enjoy your fine New Carbine !

Well guys I was having a little fun with you ... I actually know all about these rifles ...sorry I am just so pumped to be getting one I wanted to see if anyone else wanted one too!! LOL

Very lucky find and I got a pretty decent price on it as well, I can't wait to try it out. This is the 3rd 22 I bought in 2 weeks I need to stop.

Well I just need one or 2 more then I will stop.

According to the serial number I think it was made in 1994, which is after 1983 when the crossbolt saftey was introduced so it will have the cossbolt safety, but I plan to have my young daughter shooting it as well so Extra safety is a good thing. I will post more pics once it arrives.

Yea, you got me. I just didn't want a newbie wrecking a fine rifle. So I bought your story. BCwill made a good point about those safeties, I forgot about that. I hope you and your daughter have fun with it!

I thought someone might notice the ;) in the first post and catch on .. probably a bit to subtle.

If you look long enough through reviews and forum posts you can find someone complaining about just about any firearm ever made with some issue or another, some well deserved ,some owner induced issues.

However, in all my travels I haven't seen a bad word spoken about a model 39 of any sort, that has to say something.

When I worked at a sporting goods store in the late 80's ,the 39 Marlin lever 22 cost more(375.00?) than any of the center-fire rifles we stocked and we sold everyone we got as soon as they came in.

Well then let me spoil that for you.......They are too Dam expensive ! :bangHead:

I'd like to have another but it'll have to wait ;)

+1 I was looking at getting another as well but I need to wait for more reasonable pricing. I was willing to pay last years prices but WSS just told me $700 and something. Mine is still deadly accurate and reliable since 1958.

And the Price was . . .
I bought my first Marlin 39a in 1958. I always wanted the 39a Mountic and last summer I got one. 0.95 at 50 metres for ten shots with CCI MiniMags is a Minute of Gopher. I will take this one to the grave unless someone really has more money than I think it is worth. Plus the grandson (9 years) said, "I love to rack this little sucker".

My two most fave levers are my Savage 99c and my Marlin Glenfield 30-30. I just recently added a minty 9422 at an irresistable price. They all shoot real well
and when I take noobs out to the range they have something different to shoot when they get tired of the single shot bolt. Still, the one that lights me up is the Winnie 1906 takedown pump. Looks like an airgun its so small. The guys at the range are always surprised when I take it out and always want to shoot it. Have to pry it out of their hands sometimes. They all shoot very well. Even more surprised when they find out it was made in 1937. Older than all the guys at the range. I hope I work that well when I am that old:)
