This happened about two years ago, but I thought I'd put this out there just for interest's sake.

The gun was my grandfather's Cooey 12g, and it hadn't been fired in about 50 years. It's wood was pretty beat up, and I figured, why not take her out for a shoot? It appeared to be sound, bore was smooth, no pitting, and there was no visible damage to the barrel. The shot was 2 3/4" BB steel, and the gun had a full choke which had been designed for lead (there's yer problem!)

I have to ask my buddy for some winning lottery numbers, because he called what was going to happen before the shot was fired!

So you wrecked your grandfathers shotgun purposely? Most people turn them into safe queens or use ammunition within their limits.

Why would you shoot steel through a full choke? Thats pretty much the first rule of shooting steel.

Can you cut back the barrel a bit to salvage it as a cylinder bore?
 
That's the plan, I just haven't had the nerve to take the blade to her yet.

I picked up an 870 shortly thereafter, and that's my fun gun now, maybe she'll just stay as is in the safe to remind me how close things were... You can't really see it in the video due to resolution, but the missing piece of barrel hit the overhead behind me, after going right past my face. The bead sight was never heard from again.

That chunk of barrel accompanied me to the Ghan as a lucky charm.
 
It's a crime that you did it, but it is acceptable pennance that you posted to warn others. My son your sins are forgiven ~ Dominus Dominus. :D
 
Staged video?

I like the fact that the safety issue is made clear but in the video why is the speech in sync but the recoil is about 2 seconds before the sound of the shot...played it twice with the same effect?
 
watch closely, the speech is not in sync at all. It is a video of me personally (the shooter) and I promise you it is the real deal, not edited at all. I'll post pics of the shotgun too if you'd like.

I did plenty of research on the gun. I know where it was stored for the majority of the time, and as I stated, I inspected the barrel, breach and muzzle for any signs of damage or weakness before I fired it. The gun wasn't the problem. As I have said, the ammo and my lack of knowledge with regards to it were the causes of the incident. I accept the blame for destroying a family heirloom, and don't need my nose rubbed in it. I assumed all shot was lead, as that was how it used to be, and I deliberately used the mildest ammo I could find.

Just take this as a what not to do, and leave the flaming to me. I beat myself up about this every time I see the video or open my safe.
 
Meh, it was your gun to do with what you wish. Cut it back, HAVE IT INSPECTED, and keep shooting. If you have fun with it, I'm sure your gramps would approve.
