Once fired brass with primer pop-out a bit.

Hi,

I have some once fired rifle brass with primer pop-out a bit, and I use Lee product.

The problem is I can't put the brass in the shell holder, so I can't resize, and I can't use the hand prime tool to push back the primer in, etc.

Solution?

it's once fired- so the primer is DEAD- no chance of harming yourself - just knock it back in and then do your regular deprime- and back off your loads a bit-that's a HIGH PRESSURE SIGN

I tried that, but instead the primer back in the packet, it ruins the brass mouth.

May be some trick I don't know.

More often it is a low pressure sign if it was with a starting load. Not enough pressure to seal the case against the chamber walls, so the primer gets pushed back.
 
put it on top of a nut that's roughly the same size as your casehead and has a hole large enough for the primer to drop through- then use your decapper sans die or a decappng rod ( i prefer the latter) and a hammer ( soft head so you don't mush the rod) to dislodge it- ie 1 strip the decapping rod out of your die - 2 with the decapper, find your flashole and put your decapper in there- 3 place the shell/decapper on the said nut and hold it there with one hand- with your other hand, hit the decapping rod with a hammer- it SHOULD POP FREE with a couple of blows peroved you're not dealing with a crimped in primer or berdan case
 
Don't just whack at the case. Drop a piece of dowling or rod in the case, stand it on a flat steel plate and give it a solid tap.

Works fine on live primers too ie, Lee Loader or brass shotgun shells.

Or like t-star said. I ordered up a spare decapping rod just for that purpose.

I was looking for a way to push back the primer to packet, and never think simply push out.

Sometime reverse thinking helps.:cool:

if you think about it for a minute, the REASON that you can't use your shellholder/plate/whatever is the COLLAR that holds the rim- by moving it to a nut you've still got the same hole, but now that collar isn't there- it's your hand acting like a collar- in retrosepect, you could accomplish a similar feat by INVERTING the shellholder and holding the case with your hand -
 
Put case in gun and close bolt. It might push primer in, unless case is short from a mild load, which may be the situation. If closing bolt does not push it in, try pulling the trigger. That might seat the primer.
