Tried out some Bluedot in 223 today

I bought a Stevens 200 in .223 and loaded Sierra 40gr HP's over Blue Dot for my 4 year old. Lots of fun, brass last forever, cheap (although not .22LR cheap) and works for softball sized water balloons at >100yds, plus it sends a tennis ball flying much better than a 22!

You can save alot more money using cast bullets and those light charges of Blue Dot, should cut your cost in half!!

Been seeing some info in the uSA about shooting bluedot in a 223 so I thought I would give it a try. I loaded 12,13 & 14gr loads under a 40gr Vmax. Sure was a fun test. My rifle is a Sako Vixen and I got the best group with the 12gr load.
Sure makes shooting gophers with a 223 a lot more affordable, just like shooting a hornet, thats like 580 rounds from one pound of powder. FS

What was the accuracy like compared to other powders you have used?

223

My little Sako Vixen is one heck of a great rifle with almost any ammo.

I had heard about all the great results using bluedot from Accurate reloading.com and just wanted to give it a try.

For the rest of you fellows that want to try heavier bullets, just do a search for a guy named SEAFIRE, he'll be more than happy to help you out with data. FS

BD in larger bullets

Here are some MAX guide lines for bluedot with heavier projectiles for 223

Do Not Start here and work up

50gr Max 14gr Bluedot
52/53gr Max 13.7gr Bluedot
55gr 13.5 gr Bluedot

The reported accuracy of this powder is very impressive in almost any ones rifle. FS

Picked up some Bluedot today :)
Couldnt get my hands on any 40gr VMax's but i managed to grab some 40gr Nosler BT's.

Going to load some up this week and hope for some snow to melt...I cant get my 2wd pickup into any of my fav spots yet :)

Question, do you guys use Small Rifle primers or small pistol primers?? I read some posts on accuratereloading and the guy who posts all the Bluedot stuff uses Small Pistol Primers.

Well I was interested in giving this a try. So I did with 13 grains of bluedot and 40g v-max @ 100m I managed to shoot a 3/8" hole with 4 rounds and one off a bit that I blame on myself. I didn't get to try it over the chrony as it was pouring rain at that time. This was shot with a savage 16fss .223 win cases WSR primer. I could post a pic later once the paper dries out.

The copper is thicker on a small rifle primer and will tolerate higher pressures. I use small rifle primers in my 357 Marlin because with stout loads the pistol primers were bursting.

Are you guys loading Bluedot to cut down on noise or to save money? If the second case why not just shoot full power loads with surplus powder for about the same price? I get H335 equivilents for $17 a pound, at that price who cares if you burn twice as much of it? You end up in the same place. If it's about noise or barrel heat, ignore this and carry on.

It also makes your .223 shoot like a K-hornet, my 12fv loves these loads and the beauty is you can watch the gopher blow up thru the big scope because with my heavy Savage there is next to no recoil.
