deeply recessed crown

just saw this in an old 6mmbr article, and was wondering what the advantage would be to this style. I have never seen one before and didnt know if it was just for a unique look, or served some purpose..
its on a 300wsm variant with a 15twist barrel

I believe that it is called a "quiet crown" ..... I assume because it is supposed to reduce muzzle blast to the shooter ??

I think it is a creation of Richard Franklin from Richards custom rifles. I watched a metal working for rifle smiths video he put out where it is mentioned. Other than that I have no experience or knowledge if they actually work as advertised.

Winchester claimed a recessed crown (actually a counterbore roughly 3 calibers deep and a couple in diameter) reduced bullet yaw at the muzzle. This according to testing they did. Could be, but more conventional crowns seem to shoot OK. Regards, Bill.

Could be some benefit to having it recessed by about a bullet length but thats just a gut feeling based on what Leeper was saying.

The builder is launching projectiles between 3800 and 4000 fps. The recessed crown is to cut down on the noise associated with the muzzle blast.

The Remington 700 VTR has it's crown recessed +/- 1-3/4".
Two that I know of locally... one in .204 and one in .308 both shoot
surprisingly well ( even with factory ammo) for "off-the-rack" no-mod rifles.

If this indeed reduces muzzle blast how far has this technology been explored? I would like to see a study of muzzle blast, in decibels, as a function of inches of recess. If this really works one could get into the not legal silencer scenario. It could be studied using a shot out barrel that needs to be replaced.

I think you are talking about a Bloop Tube which is to lengthen the distance between the front and rear sites.

I've used one for a while on my match rifle... It does change the sound of the shot from a "crack" to a "pop".
