I will probably try all of them eventually but just looking for a starting point. What have you had luck with? Looking for a bullet to get me to 1000 yds. I know that it will depend on what the barrel likes. Just interested on seeing whats popular. And Is moly worth the trouble? They will be shot out of a 6.5x55 AI

There are many more qualified guys on this forum that launch bullets farther than I do with this round, but I have had good luck with 142s SMKs at 1000 yards.
There are a handfull of good factory bullets, such as berger, and lapuas.

You can also look at custom projectiles, such as Barts or Watson, and many more!

But anything in a match bullet in at the 140 gr range will give you B.C to get there with ease and buck the wind as best possible.

As you said your barrel will tell you what it likes when you test them at short range for groups

I have just gone with one of the cheapest that worked, and that was at around .42-44 cents a pop.

It all depends on what twist and what throat you have in the barrel. If you have a 1:8, those heavies will work well, but don't discount the medium weight bullets like the Berger 130. With a BC approaching .6, it would provide a good combination of velocity with mass and efficiency.

These are my top choices for bullets. I haven't been able to get real squeaky tight accuracy from the MK or Amax but your barrel may be completely different.

1000yds with any of the bullets is a no brainer. Just do your load tuning at 200 to 300yds and go for the smallest group WITH the least amount of vertical dispersion.

2900 to 3050fps is pretty much the velocity that all of these bullets like to fly at.

The barrel is going to be 1-8 and I think the new berger BC is quite lower now the 140gr is just under .6 and if I remember it was .64 before they adjusted there numbers. The throat will be cut to match the first bullet I choose as I have not picked out a reamer yet.
 
The AI will have lots of horsepower. You will have plenty of power for the heavies then.

Everyone's experiences are different, but it is generally believed thet the SMK 142 is the bullet to beat.

FWIW, we have 6.5 1:8's in stock now...
 
FYI I just got in some Nosler Custom Competion J4's 140 Grains in 6.5 I only have 2 boxes of 250... I checked them out personally they look almost identical as lapua and berger as far as quality and design...
 
All of the above are good choices for 1 in 8 twist, I have personally found the Lapua scenar's to have the most consistent weights on average. This makes a slight difference down range at 1000yds if you dont have time to weigh and sort individual bullets. SMK's are less expensive and work great too, I just wish their meplats were a little more uniform.
