I'd like to get a scope to mount on a 30/06, it will be used for hunting and 100 (maybe more some day) yard paper punching so something power adjustable might be handy... it would also need to have a very wide, clear view

I have no idea what kind of power settings I should be looking for... I guess I would like to see the POI from 100 yards but chances are my game will be much closer in the bush so this is why I would like something that can be power adjustable.

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

I think the VX II is more in line with the Bushnell elite 3200 for the price I think the 4200 is a better scope. Also rainguard is unmatched by Leupold's coatings and if your ever out in the rain or snow you will love the raingurad oh and it hardy fogs when you breath on them in the cold.....I would say a VX III would be more suitable to be compared to the 4200 I find Leupold over priced for what you get.

Burris FFII , 3X9 with balistic plex , selling for 200 new. Good clear, dependable scope. Mechanically & optically (glass & adjustments) equal to or superior to the VX II

Weaver K4 or 6, should be slightly cheaper. Good, solid , function scopes.

Nothing against the VX II, I own them BUT based on what I see...

I picked up both my VXIII 2.5-8x36mm for $400, one was new, one was As New...Keep an eye on the EE...

For my Leupold scopes I try to get the "Raincote" kits. I dislike flip ups. The lens's are like a filter for a camera. They offer a first line of protection against impact's and are replaceable when they wear out. The coating on the 3200's and 4200's may not be??

I found both sets on E-bay for under $100 in my hand. They are more expensive ordinarily, but if your patient??

Rumor has it that Zeiss will be offering a raincoat version on their scopes in the near future. Apparently they have paid licensing fees to Bushnell or their supplier.

New or used

If your going to purchase new your limited to what you can get. If you purchase used offthe EE you can get lucky and get a really good scope for alot less money.

For your hunting purposes I would look at the 2-8, 3-9 or max at 4-12. Anything higher than a 4 power will make close in hunting more difficult. You can also increase your odds of seeing game by increasing your objective lens from 32, 36, 40, 42, 44 or 50mm. The larger the better, but it also means more $$$.

Bushnell 3200 is a good place to start, followed by Burris FF II, Nikon Buckmasters, Falcon, Leupold VX-II, Bushnell 4200 and Leupold Vari-X III. You may even find a Leupold VX-III for your money.
