What is the most common thread for muzzle brakes on different calibres?

I know 1/2-28 is the common one for AR.

What would I use on say a .308 and a .300WM? I have read everything from 5/8 - 3/4. Figured I would ask here before I went crazy reading every article on the internet!!!

There is no common thread for brakes...

I know, but what is the most common? What would you recommend for a 300WM?

Thread size isn't important...that depends on the barrel diameter and the bore... it is how accurately the barrel is threaded and the brake fitted that is important.

I am referring to precision bolt action rifles.

This is a lightweight .300 short mag with a brake I installed... it works very well and would on a .300 Win Mag also.

I would use the largest diameter that would work with the muzzle and the brake.

Thanks. That is kinda what I was looking for. I just don't want to go to thin. I will probably try 11/16 or 3/4 then for the .300. I think the Hollands are 3/4, so if I don't like the one I make I can always put one of theirs on without having to rethread.
