What's your definition of a Precision rifle?

I'd put my money on a good shooter with a 1 MOA rifle over an average shooter with a 1/4 minute rifle any day. :D
 
Ya know, the more I explore all the variables in shooting the more it amazes me anyone can hit anything with any degree of accuracy. These things are very touchy machines (everything combined).
Fun skill set though....

That is absolutely true, as we have seen time and time again by letting new shooters try F-Class rigs.

I believe the whole point of a precision rifle is to make everything equal EXCEPT the shooter. If all it took was to place a shot exactly where aimed, Designated marksmen, snipers, competitive shooters and such would never need to be trained or or need to practice.

If one were to develop a targeting and aiming system like is used on the very latest main battle tanks, that could range, account for barrel wear, coreolis effect, altitude, shooting angle and atmospheric conditions - and put that in a rifle scope, I think I'd quit shooting.

Rifle accuracy at the precision level has reached a functional plateau, where many rifles are capable of incredible accuracy, but indeed it is the shooter that still inputs the data to extract that accuracy.
 
This is what I mean. A precision rifle is like a Swiss watch. A precision shooter is something else, but at least the shooter can learn to shoot better, whereas a rifle will only shoot as well as its built, even in the hands of the best shooters.


Does that even make any sense?

Not much more precise than one of these when shooting from a bench. The shooter still has to do his part in load development and flag reading. If in tune and the shooter is on, they are unbeatable.;)

For the simpliest of terms I would say a precision rifle is a shoulder firearm capable of accurate and consitant performance with a skilled and experienced shooter. I would not classify the fine and accurate rig picture above as a precision rifle by any means as it doesn't even meet the definition of a rifle itself. All that being said it's pretty sweet but would be a pain to haul through the bush.

Rifle: a shoulder firearm with spiral grooves cut in the inner surface of the gun barrel to give the bullet a rotatory motion and thus a more precise trajectory.

They already have.

But you need to enlist in a foreign countries army to see and play with them.

I can't afford that much aluminum! These are more than a precision rifle. They are a precision rifle system.
The term, "precision rifle" just like so many others in the shooting field, will be misused and abused by everyone with a computer keyboard.
I was berating myself for even looking at the thread but am glad I did just to see the picture of Tony's rifle. We'll see this summer if it will beat a bag gun. Regards, Bill.
 
They say that there is no better way to learn to read the wind than with a rail gun and God (and any bench rest shooters who have seen me shoot)knows how badly I need to watch my wind flags!!!!!
That will also quite possibly be used to check the repeatability and accuracy of the odd scope that supposedly has a problem. The return to battery rail gun will show a problem with a scope real quick, both in tracking and repeatability. And besides all that it is just a fine piece of equipment!!! Sure glad Jefferson got tired of packing all that aluminum around!!!!!
