Thoughts on Old Levergun Cartridges (some photos too)

Found a pic of the 38-55's but it's a fuzzy crappy one, best be taking a better one soon.

L-R 1899C 38-55, 1899F SRC 303 Sav, 1899A Short Rifle in 38-55 w Stith scope, 1899A in 32-40. Yes an 1899A Short Rifle is a real Savage offering not some cut barreled garage gun!:D

Well guys, maybe digressing, but in the same general vein; I have a "confession" to make!

I have been a "snob", nothing but black(or sorta blue or sorta brown, but not shiny silver) barrels, and WOOD-coloured stocks. The snob part was that I was convinced that the "modern" stuff was pigeon poop. I have had little or no use for self-reloaders of any sort.

I recently picked up a wonderful rethink from another member, a Model 8 Remington in 35 Rem. Everything changed, until I realized that nothing had really changed; I now know that the OLD stuff is the neat stuff. There are all ssorts of marvelously clever bullet throwers out there that are at least approaching their centennial. My Model 8 was shipped in 1922. It has a LYMAN tang sight that allowed my old eyes to off-hand 2 successive caly pigeons out on our 200 m backstop.

I guess that once again I can defer "upgrading" to a Loudenboomer-sholderbraken-new-shiny-stainless-plasticky-magnumator.

Darn!

99trix, looks like you got one gorgeous collection of Savages. Too bad you live about 3,000 kilometers to the west of my house; otherwise, I might be looking for an invitation for coffee and a gander at your beautiful Savages.

Oldbadger, I was once, in my younger days, only interested in the latest hyper-mag-stainless-etc-etc. Then I bought my first 100-year plus Winchester in 38-55. I could feel the winds of the Old Days blowing through my mind as I hefted that fine old octagon-barreled rifle. I could smell wood-smoke and horses and while I held it, I was in a Canada as it was back in the late 1800's, with more freedoms, more game, fewer people. I was bitten bad. I started getting more old Winchesters and started shooting and hunting with them. I enjoyed hunting before, but with a century-old levergun in my hand, hunting enjoyment increased by an entire magnitude and shooting as well. I sold off all my modern guns just to get more vintage Winchesters and an antique sixgun or two. My boys say, "Dad, why don't you get one of those 4,000 fps guns, so you can shoot groundhogs down in the alfalfa field right from the comfort of your own deck?" My response is that that would take all the fun of trying to sneak up on a groundhog on foot to within 50 yards and taking him with an old 32-20 with an offhand shot.

We need more Marlin photos on this thread.

You're welcome to stop by for a coffee and some gun talk if you are ever out this way!

Thanks for the invite, 99trix, Vancouver Island is way off the beaten track for me, but who knows what the future holds.

I was just in my fave gunshop waiting for service as they can be busy. They are smart though and put a rack of used guns out on the floor chained but on a long enough leash you can look at them. What do I see but an apparently old Remmie pump in 44-40. Now that would be some fun. And it looks old too-all the right missing blueing and nicked stocks etc. Mebbe I should have a closer look Im thinkin. Kind of along the same lines as OldBadger:)

Is that the remmie 14.5 @ Reliable gun?
For $300, I would take the plunge!!!!!:D

Yup, saw it there this morning. Have to check the piggy bank though, just bought a sweet Winnie 9422 in very nice shape. My 1906 was getting lonely and the CZ is such a snob.:)

bogie, just like you and oldbadger I picked up one of each of these Remington's and really have fun shooting them too. Mine is just the straight 14 though but same idea. Both are chambered 25 Rem and are very mild mannered to shoot. The 8 is wearing a Marbles peep and if things work out it will chase Whitetails this fall too.
