Looks to me like the extra grain finish as per some of the 391s that I'd inspected last year.

Is it upgraded wood or xtra wood?
Upgraded wood is highly figured walnut and xtra wood is regular grade walnut with a plastic film over it to make it look highly figured.
Xtra wood will be marked as such on the underside of the stock.

The 3901 is an American-made resurrection of the older Beretta 390. When Beretta discontinued the 390 in favour the 391, Beretta USA began manufacturing the older model in the states. It's been available in the U.S. for a few years now but not in Canada. The only major differences between the 3901 and the 390 are the absence of cut off on the left side of the reciever and the addition of the fake Xtra-wood finish.

The 390 has many fans. It's not as tolerant of light loads but it is a simpler mechancism than the 391 and easier to clean. I owned a 390 for a few years and it was a very good gun.

Claybuster,

Care to list your favourite autoloaders, maybe Berettas in particular? I have yet to see fit to replace my old 1201F waterfowl gun, it's never broke, so...

Thanks,

FM
My favourite autoloader is a Beretta 391 Urika Sporting. It does triple duty as a back up clays gun, loaner gun and waterfowler. It's gas-operated, very reliable and soft shooting.

The other gun I currently like is the Benelli Cordoba except for the ported barrels. Not good in a duck blind.

If I felt the need for 3-1/2" shells I'd select the Beretta Xtrema.
