Carbon Fiber stock

yup....... if this carbon fiber stock is so much more advanced and better...... something doesn't add up.
I just weighed one of my stocks in a similar config.... without rails , just the "chassis" , on the digi scale she comes to 1 lbs , 9 ounces.......... one ounce heavier than that carbon fiber jobby

I have not looked around at this site so the only thing I will comment on is this picture:
That does look pretty badass, although I don't know enough about carbon fiber to even know if this is a good application for it. I just love the way CF looks.

And yours is a couple hundred dollars lighter to.
well..... not saying I have any experience with it for this application...... BUT...... i have extensive background in fishng rod construction. A bunch of years ago, carbon fiber became the rage....... all the big names in fishing rods were diving in head first trying to make that perfect all carbon fiber , super strong, ultra light fishing pole....... Was great...... in the warm months. I lost rack of how many fishing rods simply blew up in my hands due to stress fractures caused by "bruising" the carbon fiber when it was cold out. like bumping the rod on a rock.... the car.... any hard surface...... and sooner or later..... the rod exploded... and i do mean just that.... exploding into bits. Now most rods are a composite of fiberglass/graphite(carbon fiber) in ratios to blance strength, flex and wieght. Serious salt water salmon and hali fishermen on the west coast here will take a fiberglass rod over a graphite/carbon fiber one any day of the week
when i went down the road for material selection for my stocks.... i was refered to the kevlar and glass cloth mediums. Strength and wieght can be balanced ust fine with these products and a good, application specific epoxy resin.
I should get that dura coat spray kit in the "carbon fiber" pattern for my stocks hehehehe i'm kidding.
These stocks were around on the firing line website last year.... i think... but could be wrong that it was either a friend of Billa Ricca's or Lee emerson's that made these up..... a high school teacher i think.......... hmmmm trying to remember the details.

Yeah, obviously you know more about fishing rods than I do but even I prefer glass rods over carbon fiber as I have seen the carbon fiber ones do some pretty strange and fragile thing over the years!
All my rods are fiberglass now and that makes me a little concerned about the material...but it could be fine, I am no expert.
Looks cool but I couldn't bring myself to spend $600 to replace the GI stocks I bought for $50, shaving off a pound or two.
I guess then I'd need all the accessories as well...so I will stick with what I have. Even if there is no issue with CF fracturing under stress.
To be honest my first thought when I saw these was "how much more nose-heavy do you want the damn gun to be?" But maybe that wouldn't be a problem if you put a heavy buttstock on...
...thus defeating the purpose of the carbon fiber.
I don't know, I'm not knocking it. But I would rather watch someone else buy one and run it for a while than guinea pig it myself.

we use a lot of carbon fiber in speargun and freedivign fin construction. it's a fantastic material, very light, very strong, very little flex in a tubular form. wonderful flex and spine in it's flat blade form.
both the speargun barrels and fin blades endure a great deal of stress. one good scratch and SNAP!
not something I'd want a battle rifle stock made from.

I have a hockey stick that is made out of carbon fiber. Its significantly thinner than any stock would be. I use it in a a refridgerated arena, or out in -30 at the outdoor rinks. It takes a LOT more beating than any stock ever would. I've never had one blow up.

The carbon arrow shaft comparison is weak. They can and do blow up, but there are greater and FAR different stresses imposed on an arrow when shot.
The arrow bends like a banana when released. It has stresses imparted across the fibers. The weak way. The rifle stock does not bend. The fibers flow in such a way that they are strongest to the recoil of the gun.

You have AKM, Sage, Troy, M14.ca, Vltor, Rauch Tactical?, McCann Industries, M14doctor, Lazerus2000's folders (nicely balanced BTW), but I think I would choose fibreglass over carbon fibre and aluminum over everything else if I didn't want any problems long term.
I'd also take a "little" extra weight if it meant a longer lasting stock that doesn't flex and that isn't susceptible to degradation under UV (over long periods).

Same with CF mountain bike frames, they take a good beating in all weather (maybe not -30). What is the difference in construction that allows them to withstand tremendous flex and vibration without exploding and snaping at joints?
