How about a warning before issuing an infraction - especially to new users?

I did something called "hotlinking" which was bad apparently.. so can I include a link as long as it is typed and not hyper linked???

I hope this doesn't affect my criminal record man

I'll explain it again, an infraction IS a warning! It's an "automated" warning sent out by Mods/Admins! It replaces the need for a mod to actually personally PM you saying what you did wrong.

god being stuck in toronto for life would be deadfull.... you beter go over and memorize all the rules on the site or your life will be miserable and full of late night phone calls from wendy

What was the hotlink to anyway? I could see an infraction for a hotlink to a poll, but I've heard of guys getting infractions for hotlinks to even dealer sites or youtube.

C'mon guys, infractions for the serious stuff, but do we need to be like army.ca? :)

Hotlinking

What is hot-linking?
Hot linking is the process of directly placing a link to an image or download on someone else's server on your web site. Popular usage restricts usage of the term "hot-linking" to doing this without obtaining prior permission.

Why is hot-linking bad?
When renting web space, people usually pay for the amount of data ("traffic") that comes through. When you hot-link to someone else's image files or downloads, they pay for the amount of data caused by this link.

Again, why is that bad?
Because the site the person themselves had may be small and thus not cause a lot of traffic. When you hot-link to their image from a forum or a more popular web site, they suddenly pay substantially more. Moreover, they don't pay that money for the people their site was created for, but for others. And finally, if you cause too much traffic on their site, they may not be able to afford running the site anymore and just take down those images that you liked so much.

What can I do to be nice?
Only use images on your own server. Get some web space and put images you want to use on your web site or in forum posts up there. Some forums also allow uploading images to their servers. That way, you (or the forum owner) pays for the traffic.

Note that all images on the web (actually, even off-web) that aren't explicitly labelled as not being copyrighted are subject to Copyright, and you may not just copy them for your own web site. Ask the owner of the site for permission to be on the safe side.

Is hot-linking illegal?
Copyright allows the creator of an image to control where an image they created will be shown and used. Hot-linking can thus constitute a violation of Copyright.

I f you look at the infraction page in your profile, it is clear that this not an infraction carrying points.
It is simply a warning.;)

now if i "hotlink" to my site with a pic like this http://www.candcknives.com/pin/DSCF2097.JPG it should be ok. seeing it is MY site.

now if 100 ppl click on this link. it would be 20 mb's or so on my bandwith witch is 999999999mb a month.

but some ppl all they have is 100-500 mb's a month on there bandwith. after that there site will be "closed" till end of month or till they upgrade.there site

now this pic is 3.0mb;s http://www.candcknives.com/pin/DSCF2030.JPG think if 100 ppl would open the link that would be 300mb's from my bandwith . witch most ppl that would make there site be over there limit for the month.

and my site is closed down right now for good. so this is not! a Advertisement!

lol

infractions can carry a warning or points (1 point for minor, 3 for major)...accumulation of 9 points leads to an automatic ban...normally a ban requires the votes of at least 5 mods.

it also says in the FAQ: "No "hotlinking" email/website info or posting of phone numbers for businesses who do not support the operation of CGN."

some say i am "strict" about removing hotlinks but so far i have not been giving out infractions for it....yet
