I am looking at buying a "cowboy" gun as was just trying to do some research as to which manufacturer makes the nicest and most well made one?

I have seen that Uberti, Pietta, Cimmaron et al make them but in terms of fit finish and value which is the best?

Depends if you want older Colt SAA style such as a Uberti, or one of the modern replicas, like the Ruger New Vaqueros. The Rugers use a transfer bar, so they are safe to holster with six rounds, whereas the Colt/Uberti style are carried on an empty chamber, with 5 rounds, just like the old days. There's lots of opinions on the various SASS and cowboy action sites. Personally, I favor the Uberti models.

I like the look and feel of the Uberti. However, the Ruger varqarous (or however you spell it) might be a little stronger made.

I'm with scanner, the Italian colt clones look and feel great but, long term the Ruger will hold up better and is backed better.

Depends on what you want it for.

Collector? Buy a Colt.

Just for fun or into the re-enactor side of CAS buy a clone. From what I have seen the Ubertis are good. I had two Piettas and they were nice pistols after I got a couple hundred rounds down the pipe.

Want to be be a serious cowboy shooter? Go Ruger. Very tough and reliable.

STI Texican

Hello Major,

I know that a lot of 1911 enthusiasts speak highly of STI firearms, and the company has recently started producing a SAA clone called the Texican. I've read a couple of magazine reviews of them, and the writers have been very positive about the high-tech manufacturing standards. I don't know if they're available in Canada ... the 1911's certainly are.
