Everyone who has tried the automatic rifle thing has abandoned it. The Brits traded the LSW for Minimis, the US ditched the M14E2 or whatever it was called. The Aussies relegated the L2A1 (their version of the C2) to reserves and training as soon as they had enough M-60s. Even the Russians have pretty much abandoned the RPK, except as a good platform for night vision, since they were not issuing it universally.
The British Airborne in Kosovo ditched the LSW unofficially, and issued the GPMG (C-6) down to section level. I read an intervies of a Russian Special Forses guy by David Fortier, and he said that regardless of what was official, if you "wanted to make things happen" you replaced the RPK with a PK whenever possible.
I agree that this is a step backwards.

But for real fire power I rather be supported by the C6 / GPMG. I know it's 7.62 but my old school teaching was to create as much damage to the enemy. IMO hit them hard - that's the way to do it. :

Why not a belt fed upper on an AR lower? You get your auto rifle, but you get the belt feed too. If you really wanted you could put both a mag feed and belt feed like the C9 has so if you're out of belts you can start using the mag well as normal. Not that I'm particularly fond of the duel feed, my own brief C9 mag fed experience being nightmarish at best. However, I'm sure the people at FN, Colt, and other companies (Knights? KevinB, an idea for you to work on over there?) could work up a reliable belt fed upper.
Actually, what ever happened to the Shrike belt fed upper? Was that ever considered for an LMG replacement?

Forgotten Lessons
I spent two years as a C9 gunner and I can tell you it sure is nice to have the link 5.56 in sustained mode. Keeps the bad guys heads down.
Hated the C9 Mag option as it didn't provide enough ammo when the section needed the supressive fire.
Sounds to me like the pencil pushers in the rear are calling the shots again and are ignoring the troops.

Hahaha He reminds me of a Sgt Tamarro I had in the regiment, where he used to tell recruits that he rappelled in the Nam and how he killed a guy by ripping his heart out with his hands and how he got a great deal on a Barrett sniper rifle in a bar for $200. Freaking guy used to believe his lies with a passion.

IN my uncles barn in Quebec after he died we found several firearms including an FG42. While we were negotiating with museums and other parties including discussions with a dealer here my cousin who is QPP had them picked up for destruction.

The USMC decided that accurate fire in lesser volumes was more important to the type of fighting occured these days.
The M249/Mk46/C9 etc are a disposable machine gun, they have a very limited lifecycle, and the bodies wearout.
We at KAC make the Stoner LMG (SLMG), which is not really a LMG more of an assault MG - its been adopted by some people - Danish Naval SF being an open source user group.
Our IAR candidate as well as LWRCI and others did not make the cut, Colt, FN, and Hk being downselected for the eventual adoption of one model.
I for one don't agree with the concept of the IAR (but I do with the AMG concept of the SLMG), as I think that while the IAR works well for Urban work in an COIN environment where low volumes of fire are necessitated due to non combatants being in the area, it is not a good platform for a less restricted area of operations and small units where a high volume of fire can be necessary for survival..
