best action to built a 338 LM your suggestion

Want to built a 338 LM, and would like to have your advice concerning a good action for a 338LM and where to get it.
 
What do you want to do? If it's for real long range shooting then you should be looking at the Nesika action. Rick at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply in Calgary can source the action (he uses them a lot) and build the rifle for you as well. He's a board sponsoring dealer and worth talking to as the 338 LM (usually in the AI guise) is his new baby. 300 SMKs at 3100 are hard to argue with.
 
Nesika action will do the job for sure. Lots of choice here. However, a Stiller or Bernard action will accomplish the same task at a fraction of the cost. If you go single shot instead of mag fed you can save some coin here as well. Most people don't shoot the big magnums fast enough in target shooting applications to warrant the expense unless being "tacticool" is an imporant consideration.

Save the extra money for the best barrel, reamer (?), muzzle break, stock, glass and bullets you can buy.

Here's another option. Buy a used Sako TRGS, if you can find one. You'll no doubt find one with a low round count as they aren't the kind of rifle one would typically use for target shooting. I suspect you'll pay somewhere in the neighbourhood of $900-$1,000. Customize as you like.

Keep in mind that a rifle in this cartridge that is practical for hunting isn't going to be suitable or desireable as a target rifle. Pick one or the other and build accordingly.

I wouldn't touch Nesika with a ten foot pole right now...They filed for chapter 11.
If Rick has one in stock....Why not!

My buddy has a Stiller tac 338...Nothing wrong with Stiller.
 
Get yourself a used brno 602 or cz550 mag action. If it is .300 or .375 you will need to open up the bolt face, if it's a .416 rigby you are good to go but there are not as many around cheap. Controled round feed and pot belly mag (holds three compared to rem. and weatherby which will hold two only). If you want it to be fancy the brno 602's need a little polishing. I read somewhere that the springs (trigger,etc.) in the 602's are alot better than in the newer 550 cz's. But if you are building a .338 lapua or .338 edge you should put a good quality aftermarket trigger in. Bell and Carlson makes a very ###y tactical style stock for a 602 / 550 action. And definately go with a 30" tube with removable break if this is to be a long range paper puncher.

It will work just fine, but like anything else if there were a problem, it might not be as strong/safe as some of the custom actions mentioned.

I still remember the 600 post threads where guys would argue till they were blue in the face about the safety of the rem 700 .338 lapua conversions.

Then Remington came out with a .338 lapua and the nay sayers disappeared. Seems like as long as a major corporation is willing to do it, it must be safe. So the question is, who determines what is safe?

As far as I'm concerned, as long you do your part and don't push the limits of the gun by shooting hot loads or not cleaning properly, you will be just fine.

It's kind of like Dewalt saying their table saw is safe. It has the potential to cut your arm off if your an idiot, but it is safe if used properly.

I personally am going to be building a couple of .338 Lapua AI's on the Stiller TAC 338 actions. I will not get a chance to put them together till breakup but from a builders standpoint they are excellent quality and a reasonable price. I got them from Ian at Robertson Composites. He took care of all the importing and had them to me in a reasonable time. Just wish I had the time to put them together.

Balckcloud this is what I was looking at first ........but where to find one of those action ? Not only somebody who said somenothing but somebody who really can get one import.

Surgeon look very nice built and come with everything triger, assembly, bottom assemble even a mag.
 
Blackclouds with me.....copy cat...haha...leave my stock alone as well. Surgeon XL is my pick, there are still ways to import its just how many hoops your willing to jump through. I believe there was a thread of someone who imported a standard surgeon repeater and the process to him 34 or 38 days. Can't remember where the thread is. there is a fairly detailed explanation on it.

I got most of the info but need to find the guys who export it, because the compagny does not do it.
