I have a chance to buy this handgun from a guy at work, I've yet to see it, he just sent the picture today, claims it is in excellent shape. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe its a model 28 Highway patrolman.
What would be a good price to pay for one of these? Want an idea what they go for before I discuss price with him.
thanks

well, its a model 586 not a hiway patrolman(model 28).
$400ish is fair

It looks more like a 586. It looks like it's in almost new shape from the pic. Very little cylinder line. It was probably around $550 new so I wouldn't pay more than that.

Having said that it's a great revolver IMO.

$400 would be a good deal from the shopping around I've been doing over the past couple of months. And yes, the full lugged barrel puts it to being the newer 586 model.

With the prices of everything going up the past few years and the generally low depreciation on guns from what I've seen and if it's as clean and seldom used as the picture indicates a price up more like $550 to $600 would be more typical as a first asking price from what I've seen in the EE section.

$400 would be an absolute steal if it's in half decent shape. A fair price as mentioned above would be $550 to $600. The exact model can be found by opening the cylinder--the model number will be stamped by the serial number on the frame. Note that some "no dash" 586's and 586-1's are eligible for a repair to fix a potential problem with certain types of .357 magnum ammunition flowing into the firing pin holes. If it's already been upgraded it'll have an "M" stamped by the serial number--although if it hasn't I would not be too worried about it. 586's are great revolvers--if you can get it for a good price you'll be very happy.

I have the 357 S&W, just marked, "357 SMITH & WESSON." This later became the model 27.
I sent pictures to a collector in the USA, who said it would be $900 to $950 in the US, because of collector interest.
It is currently on the EE for $750.

Hi
Here is a Highway Patrolman Model 28. This one is a Pre-28 as it shipped Just two Months after the Model was introduced in June 1954. In 1957 S&W started Stamping the cranes of them with the guns model number. These Five screw models are hard to locate and run about $600.00-$1000.00 depending on shape as they only had them in a five screw configuration a couple of years before going to the Four screw configuration which were stamped Model 28 in the crane area...Hammerdown

Personally, for a 586 in very good condition I'd wouldn't pay more than 550/shipped for it. If I were the seller I'd be happy to see 500 for it, but that's me. I recently sold a Highway Patrolman in very good condition for 500/shipped and I know the selling price was a tad on the low side.....

I paid $550 for this used/exc S&W 586 6" with patridge sites & also has an MD Charlton tune on the action:

Gotta admit that the 4" S&W "Highway Patrolman" is one ###y wheelgun, though....

I agree, the "Highway Patrolman" pictured above is very nice, except for the trigger shoe. That has to go!

That's a beautiful revolver, Hammerdown! I had to laugh, the picture above looks very similar to one I took of my 28-2 on the day it arrived last year. It looks like yours has a more polished finish.

Hello Master-G
I appreciate Your Kind Words. My Pre-28 shows some Light carry Wear, but when one is looking for a Model that was made for only a Year or so, Being a Five screw configuration It makes finding one much like a Needle in a Hay stack... Hammerdown

Early 28s were somewhat better finished then later ones, and there were two finishes available from S&W for this model for quite some time, if memory serves. I still have a 4" in the matte finish, and had a polished 5" for a while that got traded away. The N frame tapered lightweight shorter barrel combinations are a very nicely balanced gun, in 38, 357, or 44. - dan

I suspect your 5" N Frame >357 with the polished finish was a Model 27, not a 28. S&W made the Model 27 in 3.5, 4, 5, and 6 inch barrels at various times. That would also explain the polished finish on your gun.

S&W Model 28's (first known as the Highway Patrolman) came only in 4 and 6 inch barrels and with a matte finish and without the cross hatching on the top strap. It was a lower priced alternative to the Model 27 which was quite expensive in its day. I have never seen a S&W 28 with as polished a finish as the one in the photos above but it is an early model.
