I have two Mausers date 1906 & 1921. To me they appear unused. They are blued and have storage wear only. On the bolt release the blueing is flaking. Bores are shiny.
Both have brass disks in stock. One is marked on the 'ones' and the second is marked on the 'one' and on the 'zero' .
The stocks show storage dings only.
All numbers match. They were purchased from Lebarons in 1989.

My question is are they unissued or referbs?

Thanks

I guess my answer would be neither.

All the ones I've seen ( I have a 1911, plus a 1901 converted to an M38) and examined many others, were issue rifles withdrawn from service and sold as surplus. Refurbed? Well if you consider a replaced barrel a refurb, then yes they could be that, as from the sounds of it your barrels could very well be the second ones on your rifles.

They look like regular used '96's. How much they were used in service vs how much they were used since being surplused....no idea.

The finish doesn't look right. It appears that something has been slopped over it, and spilled over on the stock disc and rear sight. If it can't be removed and the original finish isn't still there that will seriously affect value.

M96's

From what I understand, virtually all Swede Mauser's were refurbed at least once in their long service life. Many that were imported appear un-used since rebuild. Only exception might be the 20,000 1943-44 special run of M96's built by Husqvarna lnown as FSR rifles. These were available only to members of the Shooting association. The book "The Crown Jewels" is thee bible of Swede Mauser's.

I would suggest trying a bit of Balistol and a gentle rub with a cloth see what comes up. Good looking rifle, nice crisp date stamp on the receiver. :)

Unused, probably not but most of swedish mauser rifle have been vell maintained during
their service life. The brass disk show how much time the barrel have been change.
Severals articles suggest that some swedish mauser have been rebarrelled has much as 10 times. I have seen used replacement barrel with 50%blueing outside but inside
in mint condition. You have 2 beautifull rifles so take good care. The swedish mauser is
one of the finest military rifle ever built.

Appreciate the input and information.
I am not a military collector or shooter and will be putting them up for sale on this list soon. Got to get more pictures first.
Just wanted to know what I had--they sure look new :)
