New Gun Gunk

Hey Guys,

I bought an SKS awhile back. It is brand new and covered in some gunk. I guess it is to stop it from rusting? I am not sure of how to get the gunk off and have it as a functional gun... Any tips/suggestions on how and what to use, would be greatly apprecieated.

I appologize for the technical term Gunk, but I do not know what it is called...

You can use any solvent such as varsol or paint thinner to clean off the cosmoline (gunk) preservative.

After insuring that it is unloaded, field strip the rifle. Have old newspapers, lots of rags and some brushes and have at her. Be aware that if you do it indoors, your place will stink of solvent.

'Brakleen' made by CRC works really well also, you can buy it anywhere.
Comes in a spary can, but yes, stinky.

I dont think i will lick and spit... but thanks so far... I heard that putting the gun in a garbage bag in some heat will get the cosmoline off very easily... don't know if that is true... or brake cleaner?

Brake cleaner, Go to Crappy Tire and spend $5 on a big can.

Take off the stock, drop the whole thing into a vat of varsol and leave it there for 24 hours. Then brush/wipe off the gunk(old toothbrushes are good for getting into the wee corners). Do NOT dispose of the gunk down any drain. It's toxic.

How hard is brake clean on the stock's finish? I'm assuming its to be used only on the metal bits? Princess auto usually has it much cheaper than CTC. And the proffessional strength stuff is actually cheaper than the normal stuff because it comes in a bigger can.

I have used brake cleaner (from Princess Auto ) to degrease the stock of a Norinco M14s........ worked OK but it evaporates a bit too quickly since the oils/grease are saturated into the pores of the wood.
