Or should I say, “Jeckyl & Hyde?”:D

I guess I’m just a sucker for the underdog. I first read about the Hi-Point here on GunNutz. I saw a pic of the pistol and said to myself “Self, this gun is not pretty”. But Jesus freakin’ H Christ, $261.00 tax in AND shipped? Lifetime warranty? Nine round capacity in a .45? “Hmmm” I said to myself, “I’ll betcha I can do something with that slab of steel & plastic…..”

So here it is. In all its glory. Before & after pics. Yeah, I know. Yuk it up all you want. Fact is that out of the box, this pistol & I grouped a 4”-5” spread within the 1st 15 rounds I put thru her. With an atrociously terrible trigger pull/creep and me being wary that this “Dollar store” pistol might very well blow itself up in my hands. Did I mention the ridiculous price of $261.00? Did I mention that tax & shipping was included? Ok ok.., just making sure. ;)

This is what the ugly duckling looked like when I got her. A big, bulky and clumsy brute(ette), she was the target of many taunts and wisecracks by various insensitive members of GunNutz. Being the non-superficial, artistic, warm & wonderful guy that I am however, I saw past Hi-Points’ lack of finesse and sophistication. I saw her for the beautiful swan she really was. Or should I say, the swan she could be…

I’ve put about 12 hrs into her at this point. That includes the trigger job and cosmetic work. I’m done with her for now. The trigger still needs some work, but I have to leave something for later this winter :p

Mods I did to this pistol;

Mechanical

- Replaced sear spring with one of less tension (to decrease trigger pull weight)

- Polished bearing surfaces between sear cam and trigger transfer bar (to reduce creep/pull weight)

- Polished sides of trigger transfer bar (for the same reasons as previous)

- Polished steel mating surfaces between slide & frame (for a smoother feeling when racking slide)

- Polished sides & claw face of extractor for smoother operation

- Polished feed ramp for theoretically improved feeding

Cosmetic

- Removed finger hook from trigger guard

- Removed squarish area from rear of frame

- Polished outer surface of chamber/barrel (OEM is a black paint which was a #####
to take off, I had to use my sandblaster)

- Sandblasted, polished & clear-coated the raised steel portion of the slide so as to try to give “her” a more streamlined and graceful appearance

- Sandblasted the frame to remove the rinkydink shiny smooth plastic surface which made “her” look like a toy pistol

- Soaked the frame with a Teflon-based spray lube after sandblasting so as to darken the frame colour and “smooth” the surface slightly

- Removed & discarded the plastic OEM magazine floorplate, cut down the mag by approximately .75” and pinned the bottom of the mag so as to provide support for the mag spring. This, so as to shorten the total grip height and make “her” look less clumsy

- Removed chintzy wannabe checkering (actually horizontal lines) from backstrap and front grip area & replaced with anti-slip skateboard tape to both sections

Still to come

- Silver solder a permanent mag floorplate

- Attempt to add a 1911-type safety to “her” flimsy stamped steel lever

- Put the finishing touches to the trigger action (still not close to being where I want it)

- Highlight the symbols/letters in the round Hi-Point stamp at the bottom of each side of the grips with red paint

Thanks to Drücker & Jocelyn for helping out!

Alright then, that’s it. Let the flaming begin…

Wow. You probably have the nicest hi-point in the world now!
I especially like the subtle changes to the frame and trigger guard contour. Nice touch.

Man, from the factory, that's the ugliest gun I've ever seen.... but after your work on it, I have to admit, it does look waaaaay better... might I suggest removing the rail, though? :D

I wanted to, the darn thing's useless to begin with. The rail's extremely narrow and takes a Hi-Point specific tactical light only. Problem is that the serial # is stamped at the bottom of it. I'm not sure what the procedure is for removing a serial number from a firearm and engraving it somehwere else.... Your photochop sure proves that it'd look better, though!

By the way, I know that the mag bottom isn't quite flush with the pistol bottom. As previously mentioned, I cut approx. 3/4" from the total mag length. By removing/discarding the OEM mag floorplate, I needed some way to hold the mag spring in place. So I let a little extra meat hanging at the bottom and drilled the mag to accept two spring (roll) pins. Before welding up the bottom with a plate, I'll trim the mag length and also weld up the saforementioned holes.

Oh and yes, I did lose 1 round in mag capacity. Snipped 1 coil on the mag spring just to be able to get 8 rounds in there, what with the shorter overall mag length

I emailed Hi-Point a couple of months ago to find a Canadian dealer. They didn't reply the first time. The second time they just said not available in Canada. Where did you find it?

You need to visit here more often, the HI-POINT thread has been the hottest topic here for over a month. Give the fine gentleman of Kodiakoutpost a shout and you are set.

Anyhow Peter you did an excellent job on the gun. very nice done.

I dunno about it being the "hottest" item on this site. Unless by hot you mean in respect to its "hidden beauty" :p.

Fact is, you can't really go wrong for $261.00 Did I mention shipped? Did I mention delivered? To your door? Ok, just making sure :D

Hey Peter how hard was it to polish the slide to bring out that chrome colour? It looks really good. Did you use a dremel?

It wasn't too hard. I got a piece of glass which I usually use for lapping/polishing flat metal pieces. I laid a sheet of 180 grit over the glass, allowing the front and back ends to get tucked underneath the glass so as to hold it in place. I then placed the slide on top of the sandpaper and pushed the raised ridge of slide forwards/backwards on the paper 'till the paint was all gone. That paint clings on for dear life, I might add.
I did the same thing with 400 grit and that was it. By using no finer than 400 grit, the slide finish has the same grain as a stainless slide.

One thing which I did wrong. I sprayed the slide with a satin clear high-temp paint in order to prevent the now-exposed bare steel from rusting. The high temp paint directions specify a curing time of 15-30 minutes @ 600*F for optimum adherence. I had it in the oven for about 20 minutes before taking it out. The paint had yellowed a bit, but the main issue was a slight bulging of the slide finish in 3 or 4 different areas. And only on the OEM painted surfaces, nowhere on the sanded or exposed steel. Almost as if the metal had slightly blistered or something. Strangest thing...
