I've been shooting IPSC for a few years so I'm all set for handgun. I now have a black shotgun (870 express) and a black rifle (Collt HBAR). What do I need to play?

  • sling for each long gun?
  • # of mags for AR required for a typical match? I have 4 of the 20/5, and 5 of LAR-15 so I'm thinking I'm OK there.
  • Typical am't of rifle ammo for a match?
  • Size & # of rounds for shotgun?
  • AR mag pouches on belt?
  • How do you carry shotgun ammo. I have a extension tube so I've got 7+1 on board.
  • Side saddle for shotgun - other options?
I'm in S Ont. so will probably try to attend 3 gun at EESA, or maybe Sharon or Barrie this summer.

Any advice/tips/hints are appreciated.

Thx.

"3 Gum Matches - what do I need?" ??

I suggest HubbaBubba, Trident and Excel to start...once you try it you can figure out what you really need. And always remember - don't swallow - gum is not food!

LOL...sorry I couldn't resist:D

I like Excel spearmint myself. You can pick the other two flavours. You ain't gonna live that one down!!!:p

- First tip: stop by my place when you go to EESA....I need a ride, and to borrow your 870.:D

-Second tip: Change your avitar......she keeps staring at me!

See you at the range!!

Before you go buying anything you should read the rulebook.
IPSC Rules

Some of the cool stuff that you'd probably think you'd want doesn't jive...assuming, of course, that you also want to be competitive.

What you need is a Form6NIA and get yourself to the US for 3-gun. :D

Sorry... but 3-gun here at home is lame compared to the runnin' an' gunnin' available south of the border.

Like I said, I've been shooting IPSC handgun for a couple of years. I have read the rifle & shotgun rules.

I was looking more for the tips or suggestions usually offered to newbs at a match, just so I can geared up before I get there. I've seen guys show up at handgun matches with 3 mags & 2 mag pouches because that's all they needed for the BB course. I'm looking for the 'what you need' list and maybe a little of the 'what would be nice to have' list.

In response to other the other posts:
I like my avatar - she's staring at me, not you.
I have my NIA6 from the BATFE.

  • sling for each long gun?

  • Slings are not normally used as you only use one gun at a time. I find they just get in the way.
[*]# of mags for AR required for a typical match? I have 4 of the 20/5, and 5 of LAR-15 so I'm thinking I'm OK there.

    You are more than fine..

[*]Typical am't of rifle ammo for a match?

100 rounds average so bring 200

[*]Size & # of rounds for shotgun?
Slugs for paper get low recoil if you can. I buy the S&B ones
    Buckshot for paper (rare)
Birdshot for steel and clays. I just use trap load 7 1/2s
The number can be all over the place. I generally bring 3 boxes of birdshot, 2 boxes of slugs (boxes of 25) and two 5 round boxes of buckshot

    [*]AR mag pouches on belt?

If you have them. Some of the open front pistol mags will hold AR mags.
I use a tac vest but a belt is faster.
[*]How do you carry shotgun ammo. I have a extension tube so I've got 7+1 on board.

I use a 25 round bandolier but I want to get some of the belt mounted 6 round carriers. It makes much faster reloads. 7.62mm actually built his own.

[*]Side saddle for shotgun - other options?
    Most certainly a side saddle.

I'm in S Ont. so will probably try to attend 3 gun at EESA, or maybe Sharon or Barrie this summer.

Hope to see you there................so I guess I better start oranizing one!!!

The reason that I assumed that you hadn't read the rules is because of your reference to a "sling for each long gun".

See rule 8.2.2. Oh, I forgot, you read it already...

I was referring to this:

5.2 Carry and Storage and Competitor Equipment
5.2.1 Carry and Storage – Except when within the boundaries of a safety area, or when under the supervision and
direct command of a Range Officer, the competitor’s rifle must be unloaded and carried or stored in one of
the following conditions. At the discretion of the Range Officer, failure to comply may incur a warning or
may be subject to the provisions of Rule 10.5.1.
5.2.1.1 Slung from the shoulder with the rifle reasonably vertical. The action must remain open or be
closed, or
I guess I read too much of it, rather than just enough to try to belittle some one. :jerkit:

BTW - thanks Storm, that's what I was looking for but couldn't find in the rules.
