New to the site as of today. I'm thinking of a combo gun. Always wanted a 20 gauge / 7 x 57 combo. Do they exist? What goes on top the shotgun or rifle barrel ?

To start off with, welcome to the site. There are a lot of good people here with a lot of good info and help.
As to your question, the only two that I've had anything to do with are the;

- Savage model 24 and some of its variations and the Brno ZH304. In the Savage, the closest thing I see to what you've asked about is the 30-30/12ga and the 30-30/20ga. I believe there is also a 308/12ga variation.

- Brno ZH304 I have is in 7x57R/12ga. In the 300 series there are a number of other calibers available and some with a 16ga instead of 12ga but I don't think the 20ga option you would like is available.

There may, and likely are other manufacturers of combination guns along this line but Brno & Savage are the only ones I've had anything to do with. Oh, the rifle barrel is on top.

You might find a Heym in that match
I have one in 20 ga / 222
The Euros have many combinations - but most are very rare here

Thanks

I have found on the CZ sites a variety of 12 gauges with many different rifle combinations and I have heard of the savages but thought they were mainly 410 / 22 mag and the like. My favorite type of hunting is still hunting whitetails and usually shoot them either unaware or a snapshot from close range. I thought a combo gun would be a great firearm to carry for this. Whack a couple of grouse and be ready for your deer/moose. As I said my ideal 2 calibers would be 20 gauge and 7X57, but a 12 gauge/308 or something similar would work out as well.

I wonder if any of these ever show up at the gun auctions that go on ?

I suppose that rifle barrel on top makes the most sense to accommodate the iron sights. I like the break open action as they usually are manageable for a lefty. One concern I would have is weight, you probably want to have shorter barrels to reduce the overall weight.

Farshot - great site " Heym "

Wow, they have fantastic looking stuff, now I'm just going to have to sell a kidney or my wife's car to get one. Oh well, I wasn't using either of those.:rolleyes:

If you do a google search on drilling combo guns you'll find a lot of European makes, usually expensive. I haven't heard of a 20 gauge/7 x 57 combo either past or present but there is a 16 gauge/7x57R.

Baikal Canada lists some combo's too.

Another option might be a baikal over under. I have one in 12/3006 and they do make some other calibers. I use the browning little skeeters to take a 12 gu down to 20gu or to 4-10 and they are quite good for accuracy. I put a scope on mine and use this with the shotgun shooting also and I have taking chickens out to 35 yards with this set up.

I used to own a BRNO in 12ga/7X57R with an extra set of 12ga/12ga barrels, and it only set me back $1250. I just saw another like it at the Edmonton gun show yesterday, and I think the guy wanted $1000 for it, without the extra barrels. And yes, normal 7 Mauser dies work, you just need a different shell holder.
