Turkey shells?

Usually I use Federal 3" , #5 through an Undertaker on a Win 120 , 28" barrel.
4X6 Duplex worked well too.
However , I used a old Rem Wingmaster with a 30" barrel , full choke , and a cheapo general grade 23/4" #5 on my fall turkey at 20yd.

these exact same shells throw a modified choke type pattern full of holes in my 870. this is why its very important to pattern different loads in YOUR gun.

too often you hear about guys buying a box of shells and not even taking the time to pattern the load to see how they shoot. "well my buddy joe said they work great in his gun" or "these shells are too expensive to waste" just doesnt cut it.

i use winchester supreme

What choke were you using? I shot them out of a factory Remington extra full turkey and an undertaker with equal results. My 870 is my loaner gun and it killed 3 toms last season from 25 to 46 yards.

Winchester Supreme 3" #6...

I bought 4-5 boxes when Walmart had them on sale for $5...:)

These are my goto loads for a Mossberg 500 using a Carlson ported XFULL choke. I get tight patterns out to 40 yrds.
I have tried the Federal Flitecontrol wad turkey loads, & they didn't pattern well through my gun. Apparently they work best through cylnder or modified chokes. The flitecontrol wad is designed to stay with the shot column for as long as possible. A tight, or ported choke will slow the wad down & release the shot too soon, negating the purpose of the flitecontrol wad.

And they do. I was patterning my 870 today and tried two different loads with the Flitecontrol wad. The wad was hitting my target board at 40yds.

Copper plated lead is fine. The new Winchester Supreme Elite Extended Range is a hard high density shot that should not be shot in a lead only choke.

Extended Range High density Turkey loads (with the right turkey choke!) are the best patterning long range turkey shells I have used. Flight control Federals are very good and work well if you don't use a Turkey choke. Wad stripper chokes only mess up the patterns with flight control wads, although I have used very tight (.665 ) turkey chokes and they patterned very well.

undertaker and rem full. i ended up using them on crows:D

i plan on getting a wad wizard or patternmaster choke this year

I picked up a box of federal flight control 3 1/2'' #6 and a box of 3 1/2'' #4

I will be patterning later this week through a full, Xfull and XXfull turkey choke in my mossberg 535 28'' vent rib I will post the results.

I like the Winchester supreme 3in in no.4 in my mossberg 500. You need to pattern differnt brands of shell to find the one that patterns the best in your gun like other guys have already mentioned. Some of the turkey shells are expensive, but in the end you will be glad you did, espcially when that turkey starts to come in.

I want to try to find some Hevi Shot Hevi-13. Apparently they give some great patterns.

I\C is a good choke to use on closer birds with hevi shot, Modified is prolly the best for all range shooting.

Hevi shot patterns are very tight even at longer ranges with a more open modified choke.:)

Wouldn't hesitate to use them on turkeys, but I've got a lot of 2 oz lead loads I'd rather use for now.

What choke are guys using with the flight control federal loads? my XXfull turkey choke is .670.....

I've tried them in a ported .665 Undertaker. I've read that they often do just as well or better in just a regular full choke.
