I have a new M14 that I know I will not able to use for a longer while and since this is brand new (still in plastic wrap full of cosmo with the oil soaked stock), should I take it out of the package and de-cosmo like everyone and clean the stock then treat the metal again with gun oil or just to leave it the way it is?

I am currently building my first one and I know it will takes a while due to lack of time and more important financially:( and I took Hungry's advice "Don't just get one buy two" so any tips and suggestion is more than appreciated.

I know I should post this in the general discussion but since you guys know best about the M14 and I should have better advice here!

Thank you in advance!

Cheers:cheers:

I don't know about just leaving it.I'd check out that stock. If its got a little white and fluffy now whats it gonna be like later.I opened mine and I'm glad I did.The last two stocks were just covered in the mold.

Thanks guys for your advice!

I do aware a thread about someone opened their and found white stuff (mold?) on the stock.

So what is the consensus?

Degrease the stock (dishwasher?) and refinish with tung oil or something but leave the metal in cosmo or leave the whole thing as it is without doing anything?

If I leave it untouch will the mold grow out of control and eventually destroy the stock?

Degrease fhe M14 and wash that stock... then grease up the bolt raceways and lugs. Go shoot and then mail me 3 cases to measure your chamber headspace, that's just FYI nothing alarming, but at least you will know how large your battle rifle chamber can be.

Haha..........thanks for your advice Hungry, I though you are not going to chime in due to your injury but at least I know you are okay and still able to type! LOL.

I am on your list for Burlington at the month end and I will see whether should I take both or just the one I am working on.

Cheers and get well soon!

I have found that I can degrease the stock and action very easily by first wiping the stock off with a few rags. Then wiping the stock and action with a rag soaked generously methyl hydrate (methanol). The stock cleaning becomes at most a 15 minute process.

There is virtually no further bleed through and you keep the rich wood color. Also, at the same time, you will be removing the black finish on the butt cover at the same time so the butt matches the action.

I'd leave it alone till you're ready to break it in or sell it.

I have an cosmoline coated Poly Tech (1992 I think) that's sealed in the original plastic sitting in the original box.
A small slit was cut in the bag to verify the serial number and everything looks brand new. Your rifle will keep as-is.

You still have a new in the box poly tech?

I have seen pics of your toys you posted before actually have you lost count how many M14 do you have?:D

Seriously how many do you have if you don't mind me asking?

I had 9 at one time, but I think I'm down to 7... the one in the middle is brand new.

:) Thanks!
I have two MK14 SEI rifles that are built on heel stamped Norinco receivers.

WoW, you've got to have a very well paid job to support your hobby.;)

I don't know where you located but I know all M14s variant sell for a lot more in the States and looks like it you spend well over $1500 on each rifle on those pics ($800 rifle + $700 EBR stock) and still have to add optics!

Do you know what is the normal going rate for a Nork in the States?

I was told somewhere in the $700 to $800 US range if you can find them, We should feel very lucky for getting them here for around $500 CAD:D

No kidding!

I was checking gunbroker.com and Poly Tech M14 priced @ $1500 and even Norinco M14 are in the $1000 to $1200 range:eek:

We really should follow Hungry's advice or even buy more than two while we can still get them here for a bargain compare to South of the border!:D:D:D
