Can I just stroll out to crown land and shoot rabbits?

Maybe a stupid question, but if I go out to Kananaskis or maybe Waiporous area, can I just take my .22 and look for bunnies? I don't want to offend any hikers and obvioustly don't feel like getting a talking to from the RCMP.

Any suggestions on where to go?

In Ontario, we have the Ministry of Natural resources, they produce hunting regulations which address exactly those kind of questions. Alberta must have a similar document.

I would imagine hikers are not typically offended by hunting by virtue of the fact that they understand why a person likes to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

BTW, if your hunting in an area your not supposed to be, your likely to get more than just a talking to from the RCMP

Good luck

Read the regs for Kananaskis. The issue will likely be that there is presently no open season (I know that there is no "season" for rabbits in AB) in the park. Also there are restrictions on where you can discharge a firearm, i.e. road corridors, etc. Call ASRD and ask the local F&W officer; BTW Conservation Officers (Parks) are presently the ones enforcing the no hunting areas, so you may want to ask them too.

Why not head into the green zone? Though snow could be an issue these days.

Luckily it doesn't matter if nothing is in season here, we are still allowed to carry our guns in a lot of wilderness areas...

To OP, you have to check hunting regs, and check which parks in K-country you are allowed to hunt in, as that is where you are allowed to take your guns.
I know for a fact that Highwood area is open for taking guns.

You're good to go hunting on crown land.

Unless you see no hunting signs where you park you're vehicle.

Just use common sense. If there is anyone near by, who is not in you're hunting party, don't shoot.:)

Good luck..;)

Other Animals
Porcupine, rabbit, hare, skunk, raccoon and woodchuck may be hunted, but not trapped*, without a licence throughout the province, at all times of the year.

From the regs.

You can also snare rabbits and hare all year long without a license.
