Im looking for a coyote rifle with a few requirments.
1-must be .270 and under
2-must be light and easily swung as 90% of shots will be on the run(im going to be hunting with walker hounds)
3-Im a lefty which limits brands.
I currently shoot a remington 870 shotgun and have handled a 7600 pump but im unsure of accuracy but this rifle handles just like my 870.
Id really appreciate any input as this will be my first rifle i will ever buy and im not sure what calibre to get let alone what action.
I just wanna kill coyotes:50cal:

my vote goes to a 243 always. That said, under 250yd any cal over 222 will do the job. R unning coyotes are small targets & you must be sure of range & where your bullet will hit. Good luck.

I have to agree that shooting running coyotes is going to really be a challenge with a rifle, probably best left to a shotgun at short range. If you plan on saving the hides, I think a 17 Rem, 204 Ruger, or 223 are probably your best bets. If you don't plan on keeping the hides, I would go with a 22-250 or 243, something along those lines, like others have already mentioned.

I'm generally not a pump action rifle fan, but it sounds like the Remington 7615 would be perfect for you. It's a 223Rem pump action rifle. You could get the SPS flavored one at WSS for approximately $700.00.

Here is my lefty coyote rifle.

Rem 700 CDL .243, McMillan Classic, Talley LW's, and VX III 3.5-10X40

The most accurate rifle I've owned.

Any of the bolt rifle available today will work for your coyote hunting needs I'd stay away from the heavy barrels they limit you to much if your hiking around I would also recommend a 22-250 barrel length 24"... :)

"...going to be hunting with walker hounds..." Where? You'll want to be absolutely sure hunting coyotes with dogs is legal where you are.
"...running coyotes..." Wiley can run at up to 64 KPH(about 40 MPH) when he's in a hurry. Ever shoot at anything moving that fast? Ever shoot at anything moving? It'd be entirely possible to miss Wiley and hit one of your dogs.

I have shot dozens of coyotes that were running absolutely no issue with shooting a dog chasing it unless it is right in line with the coyote in your line of fire which I doubt would ever happen, those dogs will be way behind it.

That is why I suggested not going to a long heavy barrel so you can swing onto the target quickly.

Yes i have shot at a running coyote with a shotgun.I want opinions on gun choices not my shooting ability.fyi we have 4 walker hounds for coyotes,,,its going to be alot of fun as i love working with dogs,,,,but hate coyotes.:dancingbanana:

Remington 7600 would be a great gun. Extremely reliable and accurate I have an older 760 in .270 and it is my main rifle for just about everything. If you are just going to use it for coyote .243 would be my choice, but the .270 would work great as well. Once hit it's going to fold up with either one. Someone had a 7600 .243 for sale in one of the forums a while ago with a scope for a reasonable price not sure if it sold or not.
