HELP!!!! Moving to Edmonton, AB

Hey all.

I'm in Kingston, ON right now, and today I found out that I'm being posted to 408 Sqn (TACHEL) at CFB Edmonton, AB come May.

I'm starting to check out housing, and need some advice/help:

1. Where's all the ranges at? (OBVIOUSLY the most important one) I'll be living (hopefully) on/near the base, and am looking for ranges to contact that are in the area, as I will have to do this before I move to get setup for ATTs.

2. Where the hell to live? What neighborhoods should I look at/avoid such that I won't have a terribly long (hoping for 20 mins MAX) commute? Cost will also be a factor, as I won't be rolling in the dough. Finally, living in a sketch-ass neighborhood might not be conducive to having firearms, so I'm trying to avoid those places as much as I can.

3. Does anyone know of/have any friends with listings/openings for a housemate/roommate? I can give more details about myself if I know there's an opening somewhere.

I will have a week long HHT (House Hunting Trip) the first week of May to check things out.

Calm yourself man! You're moving to gun friendly AB! I'm sure you'll find lots of help from Edm gunnutz real quick here. I would give you a hand but I'm 2.5 hrs south of there.

As for gun friendly, it's half the reason I wanted to be posted to Alberta. A friend of mine said that it'd be better to go to Gagetown. To hell with that I said!

Edmonton's most affordable gun club is the Canadian Historical Arms Society at $70 a year. You can read more about our club at http://www.chas.ab.ca. We have an outdoor range southwest of Edmonton and also an arrangement with Phoenix for indoor shooting privileges one evening per week.

I've been looking at housing, and was wondering what areas of Edmonton I should look at. I've heard bad things of Clareview, as it has a sketchy nieghbourhood. Are there any other places I should avoid, and places I should look into? I'm looking for a not too long commute to CFB Edmonton, and somewhere I can feel safe storing my firearms at home.
 
Welcome to AB man...and as proonur says, "relax"...I'm not military so I'm guessing the base your talking about is the Edmonton Garrison at Namao?
Yeah, Clairview (east northeast) isn't the greatest IMO...If you can get into Castledowns (which is north central Edmonton) Its an ok section of town. Minutes from major shopping centers on 97 st and 167 ave. And the base is only another 5 or 10 minutes north of that.
Yup, I am a member of C.H.A.S. and the range is about a 45 min to an hr west of Edm. with targets from 25 meters (pistol) out to 700 meters. Best fees around too man....$70/yr.

Theres other major sporting stores in Edm too. But if they aren't in the sponsors section at the top of the page, its frowned upon to publish the name.

45 mins to an hour to get to a range. Sounds like quite the drive! $70/yr is definitely doable though.

I'll be looking at using that 700 as well. I have a Savage 12FV .223 on order from wholesale, and its supposed to arrive in the next couple weeks. The range here is max 300m, so it'll be good to really stretch the legs on the Savage. I'm also having a buddy make me a list of everything I need to get into reloading so that I can make handloads.

I've lived in Clareview for over 5 years now and have NEVER had a problem. There's an unbelievable amount of new constuction around me so people are obviously moving here. Beverly on the other hand......
