Hail the World King............

As much as I like the 303 British, the 7.62x39 is indeed much more of a world wide King...It's everywhere.

Also goto the EE and post an ad for a SKS and an Enfield for sale and see the Enfield sit their unsold for months while the SKS is gone in a few minutes.

I have seen the same thing happen in a few gunstores I go to :D

Long live the SKS! :D

Well, maybe, but the 7.62x39 has NO CLASS! You don't see SKS's being converted into sporters, for one thing, although Remington and CZ now have bolt actions in 7.62x39. You don't read old tales of brave (perhaps daft) men dropping tigers and other fierce beasties with their trusty SKS.

Now here's REAL CLASS for the .303 lovers in the room:

The old 303 is a real treasure....A treasure that should be buried.

At least the 7.62X39 comes in some decent rifles.:nest:

The Brit .303 is one of my favourites. I recommend one in every hunters gun cabinet. Its reliable and a real work horse.

You don't get out much then as they are being made into sporters all the time with aftermarket sporter stocks. :D

As for more custom jobs, give it time it will happen.

Also in various parts of the USA and even NZ they are used as boar hunting rifles. :)

Proud owner of a #4Mk1* here... I should buy more of them... though there's never been an SKS in my cabinet, and probably never will be... weak round and ugly gun.

Are we really debating the merits of the ugly and sinful Soviet-piece-of-trash, communist-engineered, pansy-round-firing, stamped-metal-garbage called an SKS to Her Majesty's finest piece of engineering ever to grace the Empire?

What is the world coming to...?

The 7.62 x39 has been chambered in several good quality bolt actions in the last few years. Nobody is building .303 British bolt actions anymore, and it is a shame, but the .303 rimmed case probably causes issues.

I think that many deer hunters that shoot deer within 200 yards would be well served by a good 7.62x39.

Frankly, it would be just as good or better than a 30-30 lever gun.

If you go into the local small town hardware store, you will find 5 common types of ammunition almost guaranteed. 270 30-06 30-30 7mm mag and......... 303 British :)
and they look so damn good in original condition.

There are few things wrong with the smle and the 303. And so many things right. The cartridge is accurate. It has accounted for game of all sizes. And the SMLE has a deserved reputation for reliability that would put bricks to shame.

I'd heard some say that if we had to pay today's dollar for manufacturing, the SMLE would cost thousands, and I don't disagree. I love the .303, as any Canadian should, but the fact is, it's pretty dead in terms of new rifles....

Yup!
The 303Brit is a decent round, but I can't think of the last modern rifle it has been chambered in. The 7.62X39 is chambered in many nice rifles.

Historical significance aside...
Just like Elvis....The King Is Long Since Dead!

Lets put him in his grave!:nest:

Just a heads up... the sun does set on the British Empire these days. :p

Also take a moment to consider that the 7.62x39 cartridge and the SKS were battle proven evolutions of the realities of WW2.

ie...Self loading rifles having a proven advantage over bolt guns, and most combat was within 300 meters anyway.
Which is interesting as most hunters these days report taking their game animals within 200 meters.

Also the durability of the design and action of the SKS comes from the fact that it was first used in the Soviet PTRS41 Anti tank rifle.

Love it or hate it won't change the fact that in an un bubba'ed form the SKS works well. :D
