Slug in a mod. choke?

Can you shoot a slug from a mod. choke? I know it to be bad for the choke, but, is it safe to do?

No problem, shoot away.

Now flares and bear bangers would probably be a bad idea.

It doesn't harm the choke, actually. All factory slugs are made to go safely through even a full choke - litigation, you know. Actually, I think modified is one of the best choice accuracy-wise.

I'd have to say that I/C is probabably the best accuracy wise but a Mod is fine for a rifled slug as well. I assume you are refering to a rifled slug?

not so long ago all slugs were shot thru full chokes thats all thy had there were no screw in chokes you can safely shoot slugs thru a full or mod choke some even say the tighter the fit the better .one things for sure the tighter the fit the more recoil .

Why would a flare be a bad idea? I ordered a 13" backpacker for camping and in my boat. What do I need for a flare.

A flare might get stuck in the end of a barrel in a gun with a modified choke.

Hold on there, you have to watch what slug you use. Shoot only Foster or Rifled slugs. Never put a sabot slug through any choke other than a rifled tube.

I was always curious about the flare thing. Some bear bangers are fine in full choke, the ones that the Manitoba NRO's used to have work fine in full choke guns. We used to cut open bear bangers as a kid they would drop right down a full choke barrel. I wonder if it is a liability thing. Does anyone know the diameter of the actual flare component of a flare shell? I guess I should buy one and take it apart, and throw the calipers on it.

I have always heard the opposite. Sabot slugs ONLY through a rifled barrel as rifled slugs are slightly larger and can ruin your barrel and start to plug it due to the rifling getting gummed up by the rifled slug?

That's not the opposite. Sabots only through rifling, easy way to understand it. No sabots through regular constrictive chokes.

I've shot everything in my fixed MOD and IMP choked 870 barrels. Sabots, rifled slugs, steel shot, shells loaded with confetti, dimes, buttons, marbles, all kinds of washers, even rolls of paper streamers packed in a shell. No ill effect to report, just lots 'o fun.
