I asked a friend to weld up the gas system on my Nork M-14. He's a mechanic by trade and is very competent with lathes, milling machines, welders, &c. He works for the local gunsmith in Warren. He sometimes over-engineers things and before he did the welding, he make up this jig to hold the parts together in perfect alignment. I have two more for him to do and probably three others as well.

just when i was ready to unitize
i thought it was an easy process
can one manage easily without such garment?

Funny,

After a few guys had some trouble at the Jan 18 West Coast M14 Support Group clinic, I made a similar jig !! :)

It seemed like during welding while on the rifle the front band was getting caught up in a groove machined in the barrel between the shoulder and the straight cylindrical portion where the gas port is. The result was a few guys had to hammer or otherwise brutalize their rifles to get the gas cylinder off after welding.

I haven't asked Thomas yet, but I was hoping swing by during the next clinic with my gas cylinder and jig in the hopes of finally getting it welded ! :D

Ditto. I will purchase one if he can crank out a few. Pick a reasonable price for his parts and labor and let me know. My guess is there will be others that would throw down $20 or so to have a useful tool. I would make one myself but don't have easy access to a drill press right now.

I'd throw in a few bucks too for the Winnipeg Clinic. Maybe we should buy Hungry one if he wouldn't mind carting it around to clinics...

Wow, lots of interest in this goodie and lots of questions.

My chum does not want to make any more. He had his fun making this one and wants to get back to working on his old motorcycles.

He will weld up your gas system for fifteen dollars plus return mailing.

If someone wants to borrow it for a clinic, just pay for the mailing.

He doesn't want to sell it at this time.

Hope this helps - he has five more to do locally.

What do you need to weld stainless steel to steel? My dad didn't know, and he's been welding for years..
I should mention that he's a casual welder and never went to school for it as far as I know

Also, is the whole point of unitizing to make sure that the band does not come in contact with the barrel? and is only touching the gas block?
