Here is my lastest project,

rifle.jpg

Remington 700 bdl 25-06, wildcat composite stock. I'm almost finished this project, I have drilled the holes for the action screws, drilled and tapped holes for sling swivels, ground out slot for bolt handle, cut stock for length of pull, installed recoil pad, fit barrelled action to stock and bedded. Now I'm going to paint the stock, when and if it warms up a bit. I've got the Krylon cammo paint, all four colours tan, black, brown and green and I'm practicing some cammo patterns on scrap lumber. I'm not much of a cammo guy but I thought it would be a different kind of project for me, I have a few nice rifles with nice lumber already and nothing like this.

So, my question is, should I just cammo the stock, or do the whole complete rifle? I'm planning to put a vari-x III scope on top, should I cammo it too? I'm having a hard time deciding to paint the scope, I have several nice loopy's that won't be getting paint. The idea was a project just for fun, and it has been a good experience, I've never done this much work to a rifle before.

I guess the problem is, once I paint the stock, barrelled action, and scope, the whole rig will be pretty much worthless, not that it would be for sale anyways but thats what's bugging me about it.

So what do you think?

Well Paint certainly won't add any value.....but I don't necessarily think it detracts any either if tastefully done.
I sold a 223 remmie last year I painted snow camo....got about what you'd expect to pay for a decent 700 sps in 223, so it was no loss;)

I say paint it up and have Fun doing it !

Just paint the stock, and wrap the metal in the appropriate camo tape for the season. That way you can switch between summer/winter colours.

If you ever have to clean the scope off you will regret painting it. Krylon gets into everything, and using a toothpick and paint thinner to clean out tiny places and the power ring sucks.
But if you never plan on making your money back out of it, then who cares? You go Picasso..........

If you are painting it for your own use...ie camo for hunting...then have at her.
If you are doing it to increase the value it is doubtful that you will get your money back.

Nice job by the way!

Check out (Bulldog Arms) on the web, if you have not decided on a camo pattern he's got some nice stencil packages, good pricing and delivers to Canada no problem.

Hey its great to see your doing something with my old rifle!
If your weary of painting it, you could do what I was planning on doing. Send the action/barrel to a 'smith and have them fill in the hideous iron sight mounts and GunKote it white . Just a thought!

Get the action cera-koted and paint the stock. Don't paint the barreled action yourself - it's a pain in the ass to do a good job and to avoid gumming up the works.

Paint the whole rifle!!! Painting scopes voids warranties. If it's a nice scope don't do it. If you don't care or the warranty has expired go for it.

Make sure you post pics when you're done.

Will painting a leupold void the lifetime warranty? I've sent a scope to korth that was broken in half and they replaced with a new one, that couldn't have been normal wear and tear.

I wonder if a black scope on top of a painted rig would look incomplete?

Sorry Archie, got your rifle in a composite stock!

Hey Kimberman
We are not talking about a $2,000 rifle here, paint the s**t out of it. It's your project, be happy.

That's kind what I was thinking, just a plain old remmy. The action should still be worth $450 no matter what the paint job looks like. The stock needs painting anyway. Although with stock, rings and barrelled action, I've got about $900 into her. (I couldn't jew Archie_james down anymore!:))

I'd leave the scope as is, if you've got one that's beat about the edges than fine have at er, but I'd leave the nice clean leupy as is. Otherwise paint away.

I'm kind of thinking I'll leave the scope. If I think I really need to do it I can always do it later, or look for a bit of a beater.

Damn Right!!!

Why dont you just get it Cera-Koted/GunKote/whatever the fawk its called. Get it in white, it's not fancy shmancy shnow camo. But it would be a nice looking durable weather resistant finish.

Also, I think a matte finish Leupold will look just fine on a snow camo/white gun...coyotes dont have that good of eyesight :p.

I wasn't going to do snow camo. More of a traditional military with the olive drab, tan and brown. Possibly a praire pattern using ripe wheat plants and / or some praire grass. A lot of our deer hunting is done out in stubble fields or in the pastures. I'm practicing some different patterns on some old 2x4's when the temp. is a bit warmer, -24C here right now:eek:

I may do the stock first and see how it turns out, I've got a remington tupperware stock just sitting here, it may be my first victim.
