I have a SVT 40 coming in from Frontier. I would love a thread on experiences shooting, owning, reloading, where's ammo, and the thrill of owning. These guys have been in action, the firearm you own was in the hands of a fighter against the axis. Imagine the history??? I am so in awe of the potential of the Karma from my new firearm. Share your SVT ownership and experience. I ordered the Canadian Scope mount for mine and am dying to take it out on the range for the first time and see what she can do....What's your serial number, the armoury and what model? I will certainly post when I get mine later this week...

Congrats on getting your SVT-40. I own 2 & they are 2 of my favorite firearms. I only shoot handloads through mine. Surplus 7.62x54r is NOT abundant, plus I am NOT interested in shooting corrosive ammo in my guns. Boxer primed brass is not easy to find either. I just bought some from member Mysticplayer. Send him a PM, he might have some left.
One of the things I have noticed with my SVT-40's, is that the rimmed cartridges get hung up on each other if you don't stack them properly in the magazine. Make sure each cartridge rim is ahead of the one below it. Be careful of the recoil spring when disassembling your rifle. If your not careful it can spring out with force.
I have only been able to get around 3 to 4 reloads out of each cartridge. YMMV as the SVT-40 has a fluted chamber which can be hard on brass. If you reload, be sure to check each & every case for the beginnings of case head separation. I use a bent paperclip to carefully feel the inside of each case. You will feel a tiny crack forming before separation occurs. If you do get a head separation, you will usually need a stuck case tool to remove the case. I don't have one yet, & just use a cleaning rod & brush to dislodge the stuck case. I should also remind you that the SVT-40 has a muzzle brake, which makes it a very LOUD gun. Hearing protection is highly recommended. Have fun with your SVT-40.

I don't have one yet, but I'm going to try and get one this summer. I kind of like how they resemble the Ljungman rifles, and they use a more common cartridge to boot.

Congratulation for your new acquisition! I buy my svt a month ago. The gun was made at Tula in 1941, is in verygood+ cond. I have shot 40 rds of chinese 148gr surplus ammo, group average 3 inch at 100 yds. I try it in a very cold day -30c and with the gas regulator on position 1,5 work perfect. I think the 1,3 position should be ok in the summer. Overall an very good gun very pleasent to shoot.

I have one of these and I can't say enough in its favour. I found it to be very accurate right from the start. I have also found that Sellier and Bellot ammo is terrific for this rifle. Your post reminded me that I should take it to the range this week and have some fun!

Yeah I picked up one of the last ones at Epps for $329. To good of a deal to pass up, and I bought a crate of x54R while it was still available. 1943 Tula, and it is one of my favorite's to handle. It's so light, and long! To bad extra mags were like $125! That is a peice of history comrade!

The EE.

I had one, just sold it. Funny thing is... I sold it because it was too nice! I can never bear to use a gun when it's in such nice condition, as I'm worried about damaging the bluing or denting the stock, so I always end up selling the pretty ones

Very nice guns though.

I bought a real beauty from Marlin(Frontier Tax.) last fall.Stripped it down and gave it a good cleaning.Like glang1 said....watch out for that spring ,got my palm between it and the back of the reciever ,whole hand went numb with a 1/4" hole punched clean and deep.Have not had a chance to shoot it yet ,but have lots of ammo(non-corr)so this spring will see what it does.
Love the gun !

One thing to watch out for on the SVT is how hard you're cycling the action. Fiddle with the adjustable gas valve until it's ejecting and feeding 100% but isn't shooting the brass into the next county or slamming the bolt to the rear with excessive force.

SVT stocks like to crack around the rear tang and wrist if you leave the valve open all the way all the time, and over time it could theoretically weaken the rear of the receiver and cause problems similar to what the Germans got with the G/K43 (the DID copy the SVT gas system after all) when they went with more open gas systems to increase reliability.

Besides that, just make sure to clean the gas system properly after shooting - every single time and right after doing it - so you don't get rust in there from surplus ammo and you'll be fine.

The SVT has a sweet recoil. I find that when I shoot 3 position in our milsurp matches, the long weight helps me get on aim fast. The stock fits my long tall frame and I've never had trouble filling the magazines.

The two disadvantages left to post are the chamber is fluted and practically destroys the case. The other problem I've not been able to solve is the front end wood and metal parts are loose. My rifle shoots vertical strings because the parts want to resettle differently after seat shot.

Had it for two weeks

Well, I have had the SVT for two weeks. Wow factor of this rifle is incredible. The astetics of this rifle are beautiful. I love just looking at it. I will not be shooting it for a while, till late spring, but I love the feel, weight and handling. Found another clip on EE, so have two for it now. Rare item...clips...Frontier sent me a very nice one, 1941 Kovrov armoury with the scope grooves. Also got their Canadian made scope mount. I have taken the advice here to heart and other SVT40 study elsewhere. The rifle will be very well looked after as I am in no hurry, if it takes and hour or two to clean, it will get done.
