Received my 2009 Winchester Ammunition Catalogue yesterday. On page 28 they have listed a steel 28 gauge load.Xpert Steel Upland and Target 28 gauge.Velocity 1300 FPS,5/8 ounce and 6,7 size shot.To my knowledge this is the first factory loaded 28 gauge steel load.

BPI has load data for reloading steel in their Multi Hull but they used only 1/2 ounce. Now that Winchester has offered a steel load I wonder if they will offer reload data for steel in their hulls?

Sound cool, I oticed a they are doing a run of steel .410's for a company in the states. I would take the 28 load over the .410 any day of the week. This would be an awesome over decoys load for sensitive folk.

Nice to see that they are making available factory loaded non tox shot for the 28 gauge other than Bismuth and Classic shot.I expect these steel loads will not be cheap but they should be cheaper than Bismuth and Classic.

I wonder if Winchester developed a new 28 gauge wad for their 28 gauge
steel load?In the BPI handloads they use mylar inside their 28 gauge HV wad.

Sorry, & maybe I'm not getting it... But why would you want a steel load for a 28 ga. or a .410? Are they going to ban lead shot altogether?

I heard that lead prices were going up and steel was going to be cheaper to produce. That was back in the summer, don't know about metal prices now.

I would imagine the cost of ramping up for steel shot in these sizes would drive up the costs over lead? I got factory 28 ga. with 3/4 oz. load that claims 1295 F.P.S., so there's no performance gain with steel.

Excellent news. I suspect this is for the hunters who are shooting upland in no-lead zones and those who might want to take the 28 gauge for hunting ducks over decoys although larger shot would be nice for that purpose. I intend to keep an eye out for these loads and do some testing with them in my 1100. :)

Now if only someone would start making a 28 gauge slug.

That steel 28 load with #6 steel would deadly over decoys. I mean OVER decoys. Aim head and neck inside 30 yards and duck for dinner. This would be a specialty style of waterfowling and not for everyone. I shoot small gauge guns alot and it is nice to see some load development in the 28. The 28 (as stated many times before) perfoms better in the field than it does on paper.

regards, Darryl

DANCESWITHEMPTIES,,there are hunting areas and ranges in Canada and the United States where non tox shot has to be used.A 28 gauge steel factory load will help in the continued use of the 28 gauge.

I was not aware there were some areas where hunting upland game required non toxic shot. Learn something new every day. As for hunting migratory game birds with a 28 ga. or a 410. where it is legal??? I guess is a matter of opinion.
I own & love my 28 ga., but just my humble opinion, I'd stick to a 12 ga. for ducks & geese...

The 28 gauge is a duck gun in my opinion when used over decoys with the right load.It is not a long range duck gun but will work fine as long as you do not try to stretch the barrel.

I too welcome a steel load for the mighty 28! I can finally take my double duck hunting. I fell in love with my 28 the first hunt i took it on and havnt looked back since. i also wish someone would come out with a slug load for it. that steel load would be deadly over dekes!
