Open to any and all suggestions from you engineers. Chains? Metal arms to hang the gongs off? Hooks?

Hooks work best....rebar to make them....they allow a nice long weld...chains require lots of short welds and seem to fail faster

also....hooks allow gongs to 'gong' better

weld the hook to back of the target close to the edge of the plate...the metal will heat better closer to the edge and make for a stronger weld

I will bring my 'tank-part gongs'...they are about 22" square and made out of the back door off a Leopard 1 battle tank

Thanks for the input and love to see that TANK GONG. Do you have a stand for this? How heavy?

This will have to be put up on Sat afternoon for Sunday.

What could be better then trying to bust through a piece of tank with a BMG or other boomer at 2000yds?

Keep the ideas coming.

By the end of next week, I will have an idea of who is doing what so we can get to welding with plenty of time.

I think that having a few extra gongs vs stands are not a bad idea. I expect that if there is a failure, the gong will likely be what breaks. Having a few extras will ease attrition.

I don't expect too many will survive the weekend :dancingbanana:

Im going to appreciate any extras that are brought out. I can get myself and my shooting and camping gear out and thats going to about it. Seems to be a few folks coming out alone also so hooking up with a shooter/spotter partner shouldnt be a problem.
 
I'm in. Please keep me posted as well. I am coming alone and will be camping. Jerry do you know a nice spot to pitch a tent and make a little campspot? Creek or riverside. A hidded hideaway on the lake or something? What is your backyard like, haha. Thanks, see y'all there.

I would just camp in the area of the shoot. Believe me it is a perfect camp site.
 
Just remember that I will be organizing a dinner Sat night. Hopefully, the campers will also join us for a great dinner and some laughs.

I think we are pretty much full. Got a few pendings.

Myself and the wooly bully are plannin on camping

my gongs weigh a bit...specially the tank ones

BUT...I have developed 'break down' stands that store and travel well without taking up gobs of space

....someday I will show Mutt how to weld....
 
I have been busy building several gongs of various sizes and shapes to donate to this event.
I cut pieces of very heavy wall pipe about 3/4" long, and welded them to the top of each disc, so that a rod can be slid thru the pipe section to allow the gong to swing.

I also have 3 really heavy plates (one is 1 1/8" thick) that I will be working on soon.

Unfortunately, I likely will not be able to attend after all, as I just found out about something scheduled for the same weekend. So is anyone from greater Van area willing to pick these up before hand, and take them up to the shoot?

I looked again at the lightweight frame I was talking about earlier, and decided it was too small for distance work, and too light for closer in shooting. I'll just be bringing a small tripod type gong suitable for up to 1000 yds.
 
Anyone in need of reactive targets are more than welcome to come to my fabrication shop here in Calgary and have use of the welding machines, shear and brake and can rifle through the scrap bin. Please PM me for a time and date for this to happen. We work with both steel and aluminum. If not able to show up please forward me some drawings or sketches to my email – please pm for email.

This is what I have so far.

The size of the largest one does not show up very well. It is 1 1/4" plate, by 11" wide by 15" tall on the main full width portion. I haven't weighed it, but its heavy!
The six welds on the two plates on the left are holes that I plugged. (I fished these plates out of the dumper, they where revised or screwed up somehow.) I didn't feel much like plugging the 1 1/4" plate, so it comes with holes.

Katana, do you have a truck? Thats a lot of steel to pack in a Smart car, or a Mini!

tootall, that is amazing and I am sure we will find good use for them. What is the size of the hole in those hangers? Will have to look for material to make cross rods.

If you have a suggestion on how to hang these, I am all ears.

That 1 1/4" plate would be very interesting at 1400yds for the big boomers to rattle. I am sure that it will stand up to a BMG or Chey Tac.

The 8" rounds and 11" rectangles will go from 600 out to 800yds for Sat, then get moved to 1100 and 1200yds for Sunday.

The 15" will be used out to a mile.

We still need 2 around 6", 2 around 10", and a few more as big as 24" - this should be thinner steel or we will never be able to hang it.

I think the next big job is getting a strong stand design that is quick to put up and stable enough to not fall over.

Masic, thanks so much for your offer. Any ideas on stands? gongs?

Love to hear thoughts from the others who have offered to make gongs.

We should have a target rich environment.
