I got my 597 a few weeks ago and just got out to the range today.

Initially, the scope was off by about about a foot both to the right and low, I slowly started to get her dialed in towards the end of the day.

900 rounds of ammo later and the end result was about a 4" - 10 shot group.

Used Remington Game loads and Federal 36 grain bulk packs. It likes the Federal stuff way better, which is good because it's also the cheapest stuff out there as well, so win-win. The Remington's would either jam or misfire. At the end of the day, I had about 50 rounds out of 600+ of the Game Loads that were hit, but didn't fire.

I'm assuming that's 100 yards. A $500 "target rifle", that's why I sent mine back. What a waste of last spring, spent 2 months trying to get that thing to shoot. My cooey with open sights will shoot a 4" group at 100. Pretty hard to let that gun go though, it was one of the most comfortable guns I have ever shouldered.

Give him a break, it's hard to spray a target with a Hi Point in the other hand.:p Yeah, so how far away were you shooting? 50 meters as fast as you can or 100 meters with wind.

I'll guess it's not 25 meters trying unless T-Units sporting a hang over, but the target should have a cut out. Too big for 50 unless he was spraying....:D

At what distance are you shooting?

Sorry, 50 yards.

My buddies 10/22 would shot a 1.5-2" group at the same distance, but keep in mind that this is my first time shooting with this gun and the first time ever trying to sight a scope in.

I just kept shooting and moving the little knobs the way I thought they said, and eventually I got pretty close.

It was all for not though, apparently I didn't mount my scope "true enough" for my buddies standards so now I get to loosen the bolts and do it again.
Ironically, it was also my fist time mounting a scope.:)

My stock 10/22 gets the same accuracy at 50 yards, rapid fire off a support.

But, its not a special feat, I think ?Eagleye? gets cloverleafs at 100 yards with his 22.

Not bad shooting though, its a dead rabbit thats for sure.

No, not spraying. I took my time.

I kept the Hi-Point on my hip in case anyone questioned why my shooting sucked. To everyone's credit, it never became an issue.:D

Is this your first time shooting?

maybe try some different bullets. winchester dynapoints are cheap and pretty good. i never liked the federal bulk stuff-way to many hang fires and it groups like yours out of my 10/22. well, maybe not that bad but close:p

not bad i suppose, if your scope is mounted incorrectly and you were mucking with the turrets after each shot. my 10/22 shoots similar groups at 100 yards if i take my time. at 50 yards, taking my time, i'm close ato 2 inch or smaller groupings.

MY 597 shot probly 2 inch groups at 50 yards before I did some trigger polishing and floating the barrel.... After that I can do about 1-1.25" groups at 50. CCI blazers and Federal 510's work the best in mine. Dynapoints gave me stovepipes about 1 every 20 shots.

I was out at homestead yesterday and the weather was perfect. No wind at all and nice and sunny.

Funny how the 10/22 fans say that their rifles shoot better. Yeah, maybe after spending another $800 bucks on mods. :p
I've had both. The stock 597 is more accurate than the stock 10/22.

i spent nearly $1200.00 on my old 10/22 what with the gm barrel, heavy arsed thumbholed stock, trigger and action mods and a big zoom scope to get 1 to 2" 50 yard groupings.

recently i bought a 1987 vintage remington nylon 66 apache, and with a 1.5-4.5x32 bushnell banner i get 1" 10 shot groups at 25, and about 1 1/2" groupings at 50:)

plus the nylon 66 weighs about 6 pounds less than the 10/22:D

These will shoot... range was only 20m indoors not too shabby though with a plain jane 597 synthetic stock, made sure the barrel was floated though.

And yes ammunition selection is very important, not so good group with velicitors...

X2 on the ammo selection.

there can be a massive difference between 2 makes.

in my previously post about my nylon 66, i tried eley target, eley standard, winchester target, and some misc federal stuff, and the differences were huge.

the eley target maintained the 1" groupings, while the standard had a flyer here and there.

the federal stuff was 2 to 3" circle groups, while the winchester target shot about 2" higher than the others and grouped 10 shots into a 2" x6" rectangle pattern:eek:

suffice to say i gave the remaining winchester stuff to the guy sitting next to me as he said he would try it out for gophers, he even insisted on giving me a box of eley target for it:wave:

I found the CCI mini mags to be the best through mine, followed by the blazers and Winchester T22. CCI stingers didn't really group, they were all over the place at 50 yards.
