This is the first time I have seen a character in a movie carry an 8 gauge as there primary weapon. Vigo Mortinsen's character carried it all through the movie; the bloody thing was almost as big as he was. It was not the greatest western ever made, but if you have a chance just watch it for the 8 gauge.

I've even got a couple 8 guage shells kicking around. But no gun to use them with. 
I agree about the movie, not the best western by a long stretch but I'm easy with movies so I didnt mind it.

It was STUPID!
They went through all the trouble with authentic costuming and weapons and then burdened one of the main characters with a gun NO -ONE would ever choose to carry. Imagine trying to manuever that thing around inside a building, through a doorway etc....sucide. While both sawed off and full size shotties were very common back in the day I can't see anyone using a commercial hunters punt gun as an urban law officers weapon. Just not plausible.
While the movie was fun, the stupid 8 guage and the cornball ending narration -riding into the sunset- ruined it for me.

Given a choice between a single action revolver, lever action rifle and a full sized shotgun, I think I would select the shotgun. We're talking a hundred years ago, not an episode of "Tactical Impact" where all you do is clear rooms and ducking down hallways. Ever been in an old house or building of that era? Not too many corridors to duck around. And chances are you will never have to fire a shot. Movie cowboys are one thing, very few men can quick draw a pistol and hit their target with much accuracy from much more than a stones throw away. That beautiful shotgun on the other hand doesn't have to come out of a holster. Just hope the bad guy doesn't #### on your floor.
