Does anyone know how to read the choke type on a belgium made Auto 5? Besides a bunch of proof marks it only has *ACIER SPECIAL-C.12-CART.2 3/4

Thanks!

I know I can do that, I was just wondering if they marked it in a way I'm not familiar with.

Browning has two type of chokes: Invector and Invector plus! It should say this on tube. If it is an older browning it may have had aftermarket tubes installed. Who knows how they are marked?

Browning usually marks: *full, **mod. *** cylinder, -* improved modified-** imp. cyl.

notches on edge of tube 1 notch full 3 notches mod etc. etc.

Chemist, I found this random comment wandering on the internet.
No idea how valid it is though.

On the left hand side of the barrels' monobloc near the ejectors, you will
see some " * ", " $ " and " - " markings. These indicate original Belgian
factory choke designations.

Full Choke *
Improved Modified *-
Modified **
Improved Cylinder **-
Skeet **$
Cylinder ***

Norton,
these markings are markings found on browning guns. The one you described is a skeet choke o/u. The browning auto 5 that did not have chokes is marked on the barrel full, mod. or improved cylinder or whatever in plain English. If these markings are on an auto 5 and it has tubes the tubes are aftermarket and who knows? Measurement and/preferably patterning is the only way to determine true choke.

Well, my Belgium A5's choke is not marked anywhere in plain english as you suggest.
It is marked * special on the RH side of the barrel and marked "E LG *" and "12-75*" on the left hand side.
No where is the choke clearly stamped.

A few years ago, there was a CGN user that knew everything about our A5's, wish he was still here.
All questions would have already been answered.

Not sure what the E LG would be but the "*" appears to indicate full choke, "12" would be the gauge and "75" would most likely be the length of shell. 75mm is pretty close to 3 inches. Thats just my guess.

My Auto-5 serial number is 68V-2###x
The 68V indicates that it is a Magnum model 12 ga. with 3" chamber.

If it was a 68M then it would have been a Standard 12 made in 1968
If it was a 68G it would have been a Light 12 made in 1968

If it was 8V, 8G or 8M the year of manufacture would have been 1958.
